Darling of the Slow Food Movement
Paolo Bea is the undisputed star of Montefalco. We have been looking for a good source for his unique and exotic Umbrian gems for many years, and finally we have found one. The allocation is tight but the prices are good, apologies if they sell-out quickly.
Paolo Bea's are the most noteworthy, most characterful and finest in the region, made mostly from the local clone of Sangiovese and the incomparable and unforgiving Sagrantino grapes; they should rank alongside those of Piedmont and Tuscany as Italy's most profound, but they are easily over-looked, being swamped by the myriad offerings from Tuscany, just to the north.
Bea is celebrated as both a poineer and master of the 'Natural Wine' and Slow Food movements, which he embraces wholeheatedly, but this does not mean his wines need apology. Rather, they are 'naturally good!'
It has to be said that Bea's reds are not for the faint of heart. Few grapes rival Sagrantino for tannic structure, and the local Sangiovese seems to do its best to keep up with its big brother, but they are profound and uniquely styled wines of tremendous character. They come highly recommended.

Montefalco Sagrantino 'Cerrete' 2012

94 points Vinous: "The 2012 Montefalco Sagrantino Cerrete is a darkly alluring and sultry beauty, verging on rustic in the best possible way, as balsam herbs, sweet tobacco, crushed cherries and a lifting hint of mint swirls up from the glass. Its rich textures are nicely contrasted by vibrant, wild berry fruits and tantalizing acidity, yet this comes across as mellow and bassy in nature with inner tobacco and sweet herbs. A staining of concentration lingers throughout the long and dramatic finale, pinching at the cheeks with grippy tannins that are balanced by a mouthwatering sensation that maintains freshness. 96+ points Vinous: "Giampiero Bea did a fantastic job in 2016, and the Montefalco Sagrantino Pagliaro is a perfect way to experience it. An intense mix of dusty dried cherries, blood orange, crushed roses and hints of plum sauce totally captivates as this opens in the glass. It’s deeply textural yet not weighty; instead, it impresses with a near-juicy personality and core of vivid blackberry offset by sour citrus and mounting mineral tones. This finishes structured and more savory than anticipated, as salted licorice mingles with grippy tannins and hints of balsam herbs. 'Rosso de Veo' IGT 2016

94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Rosso de Veo is a dark and virile, wafting up with baked black cherry, savory air-dried meats and grilled sage. This takes a turn toward elegance on the palate, still insipidly dark yet silky-smooth, with polished red and black fruits that coast along a core of bright acidity. Through it all, grippy tannins slowly take hold, and yet the expression remains fresh, as the 2016 comes across as cool-toned and classic. This is a vintage to lose in the cellar, and just a baby step below the intensity of the Pagliaro. The 2016 spent a whopping 58 days macerating on the skins. (Drink between 2025-2033)" -Eric Guido

'Rosso de Veo' IGT 2015

93 points Vinous: "The 2015 Rosso de Veo is monstrously intense yet wonderfully balanced, showing masses of crushed black cherry, balsamic spice, stone dust and wild, exotic florals on the nose. Velvety textures give way to ripe red and blue berries with a spicy-citrus twang, backed by stimulating acids, as saline-minerality saturates under a coating of liquid violets. This finishes long, staining the palate with fruit concentrate and grippy tannins, yet considering how structured this is, there’s a balance here that provides plenty of pleasure already. Montefalco Rosso Riserva 'Pipparello' 2016

96+ points Vinous: "Dark, inward and balsamic, the 2016 Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello lifts from the glass with masses of smoky crushed stone, ash, wild herbs and dried black cherries. This is a vertical yet also racier than the 2017, with herbal-tinged red berries and minerals that penetrate deeply; all is nicely energized by brisk acidity. A staining of primary concentration lingers incredibly long, and yet the mouth is still left watering for more, as the 2016 finishes structured yet incredibly fresh. This is possibly the best and most complete rendition of Pipparello that I have ever tasted, and a total standout from this classic vintage in Montefalco. (Drink between 2026-2036)" -Eric Guido
