Tihei mouri ora.

For over nine months the old Atkinson Building on Devon Street West in New Plymouth has been under wraps while building strengthening and a complete refurbishment takes place.

Early this morning Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa and representatives from Ngāti Te Whiti hapū announced Ngāmotu House as the building’s new name and also revealing its new exterior design.

The new name is in recognition of an old hapū, which resided in the area which preceded Ngāti Te Whiti of today. It is also the name of the culturally significant Ngā Motu Islands, and is a name now more widely used for New Plymouth.

The exterior façade represents a korowai of high status that wraps around the building. Each pattern on the design has a story integrated within it.

Ānei te atikara
This morning members of Manukorihi and Otaraua hapū, together with Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa, Waka Kotahi, Fulton Hogan and New Plymouth District Council, welcomed the Honourable Minister Kiritapu Allan, Glen Bennet and Harry Dynhoven for karakia and sod-turning to mark the commencement of the Princess Street roundabout construction.
Te Tohu a Te Whiti i waiho ake ki tōna iwi ki a Te Atiawa
He raukura hei kororia ki te Atua i runga rawa
Hei maungarongo ki runga i te whenua
Hei whakaaro pai ki te tangata

VISITOR CENTRE WĀNANGA

Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa recently held an online wānanga to talk about the rebuild of the North Taranaki Visitor Centre. This project intends to strengthen our identity, connection and visibility on our mounga for Te Atiawa.

This wānanga was for uri and an opportunity for us all to come together and share our dreams, aspirations and kōrero about what this new Te Atiawa whare could look, feel and sound like. It was also a chance to meet the project team who will be bringing this project to fruition.

This online wānanga followed the first kanohi ki te kanohi hui held at Muru Raupatu Marae at the end of February 2023.
