Sustainable Brampton March 2023 Newsletter
Dear Supporter,
We are a community organisation committed to minimising our impact on the environment, promoting local food production and local businesses and building a stronger community through practical activities and campaigning.
These newsletters contain a selection of sustainability issues and events I hope will be of interest. Links (underlined) to further information are included wherever possible. Entries repeated from the previous newsletter are in grey.
ACT LOCAL
A WATER FOUNTAIN FOR BRAMPTON?
We think everyone should have free access to drinking water. We would therefore like the water fountain that was removed from the Moot Hall many years ago to be replaced. This would also reduce the use of single use plastic water bottles by visitors to Brampton. The national Refill campaign (see refill.org.uk/about/ ) has offered to pay £2500 towards the estimated installation cost of ~£5000. Please contact timothycoombe@damhead.me if you would like to help make this happen.
STARS IN THE TARN PROJECT
This imaginative project from the North Pennines AONB will involve building a natural star gazing installation at Talkin Tarn this summer using traditional craft techniques. For more information and to sign up online click on fellfoot-forward/stars-in-the-tarn/. The project will blend sustainable crafts, art, science and wellbeing into a single elegant structure.
BRAMPTON 2 ZERO
Congratulations to B2Z for the award of a £1200 grant from the Laidlaw Environment Fund for a Biodiversity Coordinator for one day a week for 10 weeks over the summer, to coordinate their projects to increase the biodiversity of the local environment; improving animal populations, pollinating/wildlife corridors and increasing carbon sequestration by preserving, protecting and increasing woodlands, bogs, wetlands, hedges, and encouraging wild gardens in Brampton.
EVENTS
23 MAR COMMUNITY CLIMATE GRANTS
A PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING OPPORTUNITY FOR SUPPORTERS!
You are invited to attend a special Cumbria Sustainability Network meeting to help select at least 4 awards of up to £10,000 large Community Climate Grants (which include 2 Brampton and Beyond Energy AD and Brampton 2 Zero projects) which will be held on zoom at 7pm this Thursday evening.
Each of the 7 eligible projects will first be presented in 3 minutes. All participants will then vote on which they consider will have most impact on tackling climate change and building the Zero Carbon movement in Cumbria. At least 4 projects will be funded and we would like the widest participation from supporters to make this as fair and accountable a process as possible.
You can register for the event by clicking on this link cafs.org.uk/civicrm/ to be sent a summary of each project. This is your opportunity to influence where National Lottery funding should be spent to best effect in Cumbria!
