Greetings,

We hope you’re doing well! We have two important updates from the past month we want to highlight:

First, we’re hiring for a Welfare Standard Lead/Manager (exact designation depending on prior experience).

Read the Job Description here
As the welfare improvements we make in the lives of farmed fishes
are the foundation of our impact, the Welfare Standard Lead/Manager
is one of the most important roles we have ever hired for
.
This person will be tasked with running on-ground trials—like this one
—to assess promising welfare improvements and managing the team
involved, in Andhra Pradesh, India. A sufficiently experienced person
may also be tasked with leading our Welfare Standard department,
and have the designation “Welfare Standard Lead” (while we’re
considering less experienced people for the Manager role).

If you’re interested, we encourage you to read more (or respond to
          this email).

And please share this with anyone you think would suit this role!

Second, we recently published important strategy updates—essentially, we are investing more heavily in our farmer-centric work:

Our earlier understanding was that farmer-centric approaches may
not be scalable. However, now we not only think that farmer-centric
approaches are more promising than we once did, we believe they
are likely the best way to scale our work.

We think this is an important update for both our work as well
as for the broader animal protection movement, which hasn’t yet
made much headway helping fishes in lower- and middle-income
countries. While we’re still in the early days here, we tentatively think
that farmer-centric, bottom-up approaches could be the key to
making a difference in these contexts.
Keep reading for the results of our recent culture survey, a financial update, and more.

Have a great week,

Culture Survey Results

As part of our commitment to transparency, we recently published the raw data of our latest two anonymous quarterly culture surveys. The results broadly reflect well on FWI and the values we foster here, though they also point to several areas we can and should improve. Financial Update

We’re excited to share that, thanks to the generous donations of many supporters, our 2023 funding gap is now filled. Additional donations now will support our work in 2024. Note though that we have not yet published formal plans or a budget for 2024—we expect to do so between August and December of this year.

As always, you can learn more about our up-to-date funding situation in the FAQ section on our donation page. Thank you all who donated!
