Good News!

A new chapter for our charity.

Dear supporter,

As you may know from our newsletters, following some real challenges for Uzima in Our Hands (UIOH) we are no longer operating as we were - instead of funding a physical centre, we are now supporting individual needy children with education scholarships. We successfully moved 67 of our most vulnerable primary-aged children last September, from the Uzima Orphan Centre to other schools in the area with the help of a local education charity called ‘Rise to Shine Education Foundation’ (RTSEF). After our departure, these children had been left with no education at all and in many cases hungry at home when Uzima school started charging large fees. Many of them were sponsored by our supporters and we have known them for a long time. It is a joy to see these children happy again. Each one has been carefully assessed for need.

RTSEF specialise in education scholarships for needy children. These 67 Uzima children have been registered to local primary schools, given new uniform, bags and shoes and they began school in September of last year. In early 2022, Joy met the founder and director of RTSEF - Emily Bakitah - who was once a sponsored child herself and we have now got to know her very well. She is an amazing woman of great integrity, action and intelligence, and we are delighted to be working with her.

Bakitah’s work with RTSEF is truly inspiring, and we would like to continue to support her charity. To enable us to support her work fully, we’re staying open as a charity and will be known as ‘Uzima In Our Hands Education Foundation’, shifting our focus to education scholarships.

So, we’re carrying on!

If you still give financially to our charity - thank you! We would be delighted if you would continue, as we conclude educational scholarships are the best way out of poverty for the poorest of children in this area of Kenya.

So, what happens next?

In time, RTSEF in Kenya will be able to update you directly on their work and we will write again asking for your permission to pass on your email address. Bakitah herself will be in the UK in October, and there may be an opportunity to meet her. If you have any questions about our way forward, please email us. We’d love to hear from you.

Blessings & our grateful thanks for your continued support whilst we have grappled with (and prayed hard!) about how best to continue to serve the very vulnerable children we all care for.
