Spring House Tavern

One of the more sophisticated, upscale, and fine-dining experiences you can have in the area in our opinion is that at the Spring House Tavern (corner of Norristown Road and Bethlehem Pike) in Spring House/Gwynedd, PA. Per their website, the history of the establishment is pretty extensive, and extremely interesting... Established in 1719, the Spring House Tavern has been a destination for travelers and dining for three centuries. There are seven documented 18th century inns operating between Spring House and the Allentown Road terminus. In 1735, forks in the road were formed around the Spring House, which was an old settlement at the time. By 1763, Martin Shoemaker owned the Spring House Hotel. A stagecoach line ran between Philadelphia and Bethlehem and most travelers likely stayed the night at the Spring House Hotel. The hotel was named for a small stone building across the street that housed one of several local springs and has since been demolished. The busy junction of Sumneytown Pike and Bethlehem Pike is what sustained the hotel for many years. In 1778, Revolutionary War General Lacey referenced the hotel as the Spring House Tavern in 1778 in his dispatches to his men who were stationed here to intercept supplies to the British. Benjamin Davis was the owner after Shoemaker until Christian Dull became proprietor of the Spring House Hotel from 1773 through 1827. In 1888, a fire destroyed the Hotel when Samuel Custer was proprietor. Custer quickly rebuilt the Spring House Hotel, since he could rely on the patronage of those traveling Bethlehem Pike. The hotel was rebuilt on the original foundation and soon became a landmark in its own right. By the early 1900’s, the Spring House Hotel was run by Charlie Kuebler from Philadelphia. In 1948 Charles Burns and his son, George Burns, bought the Spring House Tavern. In the mid 1980’s, the business was passed on to the third generation owner, James Burns. While maintaining the historic architecture, Jim expanded the business with renovations and additions to the building, as it exists today.

Jim’s life was devoted to making the Spring House Tavern a warm and welcoming restaurant for his customers. He was the head chef since the early 1980’s, but could also be found landscaping and managing the business. He made significant changes to the restaurant including building the banquet rooms, adding the beautiful terrace, and renovating the bistro bar. Jim passed away in January 2015 and passed the restaurant on to the next generation (his daughters Karleigh and Marisa Burns), who continue to operate the establishment today, and hope to carry on Jim’s legacy and passion for the Spring House Tavern.

Now to the food... We'd be remiss not to start with mentioning their famous Spring House Crab Cakes, which of course are made from Jim's secret recipe, and it's said that to date they have sold over 1.5 million of them to their loyal diners (and crab cake fans). There's really not much on their menu that won't peak your interest or isn't worth a try! A few of our personal favorites are their Snapper Soup, the Bacon wrapped Scallops, the French Dip sandwich, their Prime Rib (which is a special on Tuesdays), the Roast Duck, and of course the famous Spring House Crab Cakes. They've got 16 rotating taps, some great specialty cocktails, and an impressive in-house wine list to accompany your dining experience as well...

Next time you are in the Spring House / Gwynedd / Blue Bell / Ambler areas we definitely suggest you give the Spring House Tavern a try! It's not only a historic landmark, but a gorgeous building, tremendous dining experience, great owners and service, and some delicious food to go along with all of that.

M & M Dim Sum & HK BBQ will be opening at 6 East 1st Avenue in Conshohocken. Vic says in the post, "Relax Jack is something said quite often in my house with two under 4. At the end of the day I’m often feeling like I need a drink. However alcohol isn’t always the answer..." Next time you are looking for a great mocktail recipe, be sure to give this one a try!

- 0.5 oz Super ginger syrup (you can DM Victor on Instagram for the recipe)
- 0.5 oz lime juice

- High Rise (@highrisebev) Grapefruit CBD seltzer

Add the first three ingredients to a cocktail shaker with one piece of ice, shake until chilled and double strain onto a big block of ice. Top with the seltzer, and garnish with mint.
