Missionary Spotting

Last Sunday there was a missionary spotting at Roswell UMC: in Chapel Roswell and in the CUC, Bereans, and Discovery Sunday School classes! Julie and Dave Eberhard were on campus in between travels from their Kentucky home and their global work. This couple is a part of the ministry called Wycliffe Translators, bringing scripture to all corners of the world. It is quite beautiful to imagine people reading the Bible in their own language, for the first time!

In one of the conversations, Dave said, “Not all words can be translated. There are some words that do not have an equivalent word.” He went on to share that one of these words is one of the most important in faith: Believe. In one African language, you must combine two words to get the same meaning. Put together, the definitions of those two words are, "to listen," and “to hold on to it with your hands.”

In many ways, our missionaries hold onto much in their hands. Our Dare to Care teams hold hammers and nails. Our tutors at Vickery Mill hold books and pencils. In health clinics across the world, workers hold bodies and treatments.

Think of all that a missionary’s hand holds.

There are only about two weeks left until Easter when the disciples will try to hold on to a carpenter, a teacher, and a healer.
As we round out our Lenten Journey, may we spend time learning and serving with this new translation. May our days be filled with listening so that when we find the tomb empty, we know what to hold in our hands and believe.

See you Sunday,

We will be holding in-person worship services led by Dr. Tom Davis at 9 and 11:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary. A digital bulletin will be available at rumc.com/sundays.
