L'ÉQUIPE-CHOC ENGLISH COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

March 2023
Dear Readers,

Spring is just around the corner and with it comes a time of renewed life. Nature’s resilience inspired us to make it the focus of our newsletter. Of course, resilience has been a very popular word these past three years, and there is still much relevance to developing resilience, especially in an educational context. Marilyn Price-Mitchell, a developmental psychologist and author defines resilience as the “art of cultivating an approach to life that views obstacles as a critical part of success.”

Resilience requires practice; it works like a muscle and is built through perseverance and repetition. Above all, resilience is the belief that while you can't control everything in your learners’ lives, there are many aspects you can control, including your attitude. Here are simple strategies to help your students build resilience through simple attitude adjustments.
  • Developing resilience involves setting personal goals that are ambitious, yet achievable. To facilitate such an undertaking, a more open attitude towards the discomfort and resistance that will stand in the way of achieving these goals is necessary.
  • Learning from obstacles is key to becoming a resilient person. By creating a culture where setbacks and disappointment are an honoured part of learning, praising learners for their hard work and grit, we will guide learners to success.
  • Stress or frustration are forms of pressure that we need to spring back from. Fostering resilience acknowledges and compliments learners who take responsible risks and challenge themselves.
In the next few weeks, focus on the things you can control. You might not be able to control what is going on in the world right now, but you can control your news intake, your kindness towards others and yourself, your attitude. And remember to treat yourself with kindness and tend to your health first.

Until the next time,

How to Promote Resilience in Your Students

by Marie Amaro

Resilience is the ability to cope with negative life events and challenges. It has been described as the capacity to ‘bounce back’ from difficult situations and persist in the face of adversity. Developing resilience in young people is considered by many as the antidote to the epidemic of mental ill-health across our society today. The rate of students with anxiety and depression is of growing concern (Sawyer et al, 2000; Mission Australia, 2009) and schools are uniquely placed to contribute to healthy student attitudes and self-awareness.

The Duality of Resiliency

By Harold Brown

If nothing is guaranteed, we know that there will be obstacles throughout life that will innately stimulate our desire to be resilient. However, if we are not mindful, we miss an opportunity to explore and understand the dual nature of resiliency, thereby leaving pieces of ourselves unresolved. In this talk The Duality of Resiliency, Harold will explore how he has navigated resilience from a different perspective in order to continually progress in a holistic way.
