Ahoy and welcome to Spring!
I am writing this from the deck of a large boat.  No we didn't upgrade LaFortuna but are voyaging on the South Pacific aboard the SS Noordam.  We started in Aukland, New Zealand and will finish at the port of Vancouver.  Quite a wonderful adventure!

Our March social night with False Creek Friends was well received and certainly generated a lot of feedback and comments.  Many of you were asking about contact information for this group.  I have included their social media and contact information further in this Masthead with pictures from that evening.

Our April social night, Monday April 17th at the FCYC is sure to be another very  interesting one.   Weather - we love it or hate it but it is always a concern for us boaters (and non-boaters!)  Come out to hear Ross McDonald from Environment Canada take some of the mystery out of this topic and tell us what those forecasts really mean!

For those looking for a Radio Course, Peter Bennet still has one-day courses  scheduled for April and May for those needing their ROC(M)

Ingrid and Deano have reserved space at the Union Steamship Marina on Bowen Island for our Squadron's first official cruise of the season.  The date is May 26-28 so book your berth soon to make sure that you have a spot at this fun annual event.  No boat - no problem.  Come over on the ferry for the Saturday potluck or book a cabin for the whole weekend.  Text Ingrid at 778-879-9024

Though missed in the PMD bi-monthly newsletter, Vancouver  will be hosting a Flare Return Day at Steveston Marine, 5th avenue, Vancouver location on Saturday June 03.   A good day to dispose of your expired flares and buy some new ones.  P/Cdr  Bill Botham is coordinating this event and is actively seeking volunteers to help out.  Contact him at wb2325@telus.net

We are still looking for volunteers for our Bridge, the executive committee of our Squadron. Please let us know that you are interested in getting involved and helping the squadron grow and flourish.  It's a great way to meet people, learn new skills, teach others new skills, organize a social event, publish a newsletter.   Our  year-end is this month so we hope to welcome some new faces at our May AGM.

Marine Weather Resources from Environment and Climate Change Canada

Ever wonder what causes wind? And how terrain effects it? Ever wonder where gale force winds begin and when they get upgraded to storm force? What about other marine hazards like fog, freezing spray, or waterspouts? Come in and listen to Environment and Climate Change Canada Senior Meteorologist Ross Macdonald discuss all aspects of marine weather and marine weather forecasting for coastal B.C. waters.

Ross Macdonald
Ross Macdonald is a Senior Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. He has 15 years of experience forecasting for the B.C. coastal waters at the Weather Office in downtown Vancouver. He believes that education plays an important role in enhancing knowledge and empowering individuals to make good decisions and be safe when out on the water. In his spare time Ross is an active outdoor enthusiast and enjoys everything that our that beautiful British Columbia has to offer including trail running, hiking, and kayaking.

The Friends of False Creek presentation at our March Squadron night created quite the buzz!   People are definitely passionate about the health of False Creek and it's future.  The group is quite new but has already completed many activities.  The verdict is that False Creek IS relatively healthy but there is still a long ways to go.   It was interesting to see how the sea life if adapting to a habitat of old shopping carts and other debris on the sea bottom. If you are interested in learning more or volunteering with the group, here is the contact info:

Boat for Hope is a one-of-a-kind event that brings kids who have been helped by Variety – the Children’s Charity of BC out for a memorable day on the ‘high seas’. Generous boat owners donate their time and their vessels to take the kids and their families on a pirate adventure through False Creek. The young pirates collect loot bags along the way at various ‘Treasure Stations’ which are sponsored by local businesses. Following their frolicking voyage, they’ll head over to Hastings Mill Park to enjoy a a hearty BBQ along with games & live entertainment. Boat for Hope provides a day of adventure & amusement for over 450 children with special needs and their families allowing them to spend quality time together in a stress free environment.
What are your responsibilities as a Boat for Hope Skipper? Bring your boat (at least 25 ft power boat) and crew to the docks of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on Saturday, June 10th. They will be there waiting with  pint-sized pirates and their families. Once everyone’s boarded, you will take them out on an unforgettable pirate adventure! Most Skippers take part in 2-3 trips each lasting approximately 90 minutes. Skippers will be required to provide life jackets for the adults who will be accompanying the kids. Life jackets for the children will be provided by Mustang Survival
In appreciation of your participation as a Skipper and a Boat for Hope fundraiser, Variety will be providing you with a tax receipt up to $750 for your fuel.
