It was to be The Galleys last weekend in the kitchen this weekend, unfortunately Al has tested positive for covid so the kitchen will not be open.
The next three weeks will be challenging for the club until the new chef takes over April the 13th. (more info on this in an e-news tomorrow)
We will be providing "The Pantry" meals for the interim.
Youth and Community Fishing
Held Saturday 11 th of March
Yet again we were extremely lucky with the weather on Saturday the 11 th of
March for our Youth and Community Fishing Event. It was a bit lumpy in the
morning but after a stunning cooked breakfast and a briefing, the sea calmed
enough for all 19 participants and their parents/caregivers to safely launch at
8am.
Last year’s event was cancelled due to Covid 19 so this was officially the 10 th
year that the club has run this event, and what a cracker it was. The sun was
shining, there was no wind and just a moderate swell to contend with.
We limited the number of fish each boat could catch but that did not stop a
number of really good fights and sporting catches. There was still plenty of fish
for the participants to take home for their whanau.
All up we had just under 100 people involved on the day. We had the
participants and their parents/caregivers plus a mountain of volunteers. Heliworx
staff providing their time for free, the owner of JB’s and a staff member provided
their time and a water spreader for free. We had the dedicated Soroptimst ladies
preparing the food and the Air Cadets providing the security of the beach for
when the Helicopter was flying overhead. And who can forget our amazing club
members. From the skippers who gave up not only their time but also provided
their boats free of charge, plus their crew. The traffic control, filliters, coastguard,
watch tower and the team that helped launch and retrieve the boats. On behalf
of the committee I would like to thank each and every one of you. You are all
bloody legends.
We had a few challengers along the way. The Tuna competition was held the same day. We will work with the Tuna competition event organisers to ensure we do not have a clash next year. Also, we had a few
hoops to jump through with the council to allow the Helicopter to land in the
carpark. The new mayor was an amazing help and we now know for next year what we need to do to ensure a smooth process to obtain consent.
The final event for the participants was the Helicopter ride. With perfect blue
skies and no wind to speak of, this was a highlight for most. Have a look at some
of the photos our photographer and club member, Roger took. Just stunning.
The following is an extract from a thank you letter from a participant’s father. This
sums up why many of us are involved in this event:
“The whole day was simply magical so thank you, the skippers and your
volunteers.
Look life can be tough for these kids – and their families but knowing there are
people out there that ‘see’ them matters more than you can ever imagine.
Thank You”
Finally, I want to thank all of our sponsors and club members for their generous
contributions. Without you all we could not run an event like this. Our sponsors
are the backbone of this event so if you have the opportunity to support them
please do:
