In honour of Women’s History Month and International Women's Day this March, we are spotlighting some of the women in our own network, many of whom make up the collective expertise we rely on so immensely, and our female authors who continually astound us with such creative, brave and powerful writing.
As we are in the business of words, I was particularly inspired by this year’s campaign theme for International Women's Day, embracing equity, not equality – highlighting both the distinction between the two terms, which are used so interchangeably, and the importance of definition when it comes to such a critical cause. You can read more about this on the official website.

And, briefly, looking at the year ahead, we are so incredibly excited at some of the female-focused achievements we have yet to announce, so keep your eyes peeled!

Law of attraction: why female memoirs should appeal to all genders

Women have been writing memoirs since the 14th century, most notably Julian of Norwich (1342), Margery Kempe (1373) and French Princess Margaret of Valois (1553). The autobiographical memoir was a format that allowed them to use their voices in spaces that banned them from speaking. Today, women continue to use the memoir to make themselves heard, to take ownership of their stories and to finally control the narrative. Overall, women’s share of published titles has increased from around 20% in the 1970s to over 50% by 2020. By 2021, female-authored books sold more copies on average than those written by men.

Writing consultant and editor Sam Boyce has worked with writers professionally for nearly thirty years, and has helped hundreds of emerging and established authors

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring authors currently writing their memoir?

Oh, I have so much advice! Being clear about who you’re writing for and what you intend to give them by way of your story is probably the most important. The other major piece of advice I have is to remember that telling the truth is your job description, but you’re not in court – so telling the whole truth isn’t required. To keep yourself emotionally safe through the publication process, you may need to think about where you put the boundaries around what you are and are not willing to disclose. Then, notwithstanding that fundamental requirement for truth, not to be afraid of minor acts of invention when it comes to the reconstruction of dialogue and settings. Creating the colour and character that makes your story immersive often involves filling in the gaps in what you remember, particularly with scenes set in the less recent past.
