March 2023
The University of Virginia team receives the first place trophy at the 2023 Cyber Fusion competition, held at Virginia Military Institute, co-hosted by the Virginia Cyber Range and Virginia Military Institute.

A Message from the Executive Director

Dear <<First Name>>,

Students built their cybersecurity skills at several CCI-supported events in the past month. Cyber Fusion 2023  brought 150 students and 30 faculty advisors from across Virginia in late February to participate in a capture-the-flag competition, attend a job fair, and learn from experts.

Tidewater Community College (TCC) placed first in the community college division at 2023 Cyber Forge.

Congratulations to the winners in the community college division: Tidewater Community College (TCC) placed first, Laurel Ridge Community College was second, and Virginia Western Community College was third. In the four-year-college division, the University of Virginia team took first place, Liberty University came in second, and George Mason University was third.

CCI is proud to co-host the event with the Virginia Cyber Range and Virginia Military Institute. Our industry partner CACI was part of the event and gave a CACI Kit, which includes a networked single-board computer kit and Wi-Fi card, to each of the community college teams.

Cyberforge

Students attending Cyberforge 2023 this month at Christopher Newport University learned about different cybersecurity careers and engaged in a capture-the-flag competition. Congratulations to the winning team members from Old Dominion University, William & Mary, Christopher Newport University, and Tidewater Community College!

The CCI Coastal Virginia Node, Coastal Virginia Cybersecurity Student Association (CVCSA), and CNU Cybersecurity Club hosted this successful event.

CCI welcomes international visitors

Delegation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

We’re pleased more companies, government partners, and notable international representatives are visiting us in Arlington to get a closer look at the CCI xG Testbed.

A 25-member delegation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which was led by two Deputy Ministers and included prominent industry and academic leaders, met with the CCI xG Testbed team to learn more about our end-to-end Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN), as well as our cybersecurity development program, which is helping fill jobs in Virginia. The delegation was accompanied by personnel from the White House and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

CCI takes a field trip to
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

We’re also visiting our D.C.-area neighbors to enhance collaboration opportunities. A group of CCI researchers recently toured the 5G and Electromagnetic Compatibility Lab at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, Md., to learn more about how connectivity innovation can benefit patients in the area and beyond. The research team included Eric Burger, Yi Shi, Aloizio DaSilva, Jacek Kibilda, Priyanka Sinha, Mayukh Chowdhury, Andre Gomes, Aditya Sithish, and Walid Saad.

An anechoic chamber is used for wireless signal measurements and is designed to shelter experiments from outside emissions. It removes or controls reflections inside the room to ensure the least disruption to the tested signals.

Meet Up to Startup

The new Meet Up to Startup program is traveling across the state, connecting CCI faculty and students from 41 Virginia universities and colleges with venture capitalists. The next stop is at the Staunton Innovation Hub (serving members of CCI’s Northern, Central, and Southwest nodes) on April 12 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. ET at 11. N. Central Ave. in Staunton, Va. Visit the webpage to learn more about past events.

Experiential Learning 2023 Call for Proposals opens March 31

A vital part of our mission includes giving students the expertise they need for successful careers in cybersecurity. The CCI Experiential Learning Program new call for proposals opens on March 31. Past funded projects have enabled students to work as interns in startups, secure our nation’s infrastructure, protect privacy, work on digital forensics with the Virginia State Police, and more. I’m looking forward to reading the proposals.

CCI Research Showcase 2023 Call for Published Papers opens March 31

We want to highlight the impressive work being done by the CCI research community to advance cybersecurity research. Starting March 31, we’ll be asking for submissions of peer-reviewed research papers that have been accepted for publication or published in the past two years.

We will feature the selected papers on our website, in social media posts, in the CCI annual report, and other CCI publications to help increase the readership and impact of each paper. We’ll also work with your home university to spread the word about your research. The first submission deadline is April 24. Watch for the email.
