Message from the Board

Dear Gardner community,

On Tuesday, March 21, 2023 the Board of Trustees met virtually and were joined by one guest from the community.

At the meeting, the Board of Trustees:

  • Celebrated the Business After Hours event hosted at the school on March 14- thank you to everyone who attended, and all the work that our staff, admin, and Development Committee put into making this a fun way to show folks in Clark County what's so special about Gardner!

  • Learned about preparations for the upcoming auction on April 22- don't forget to purchase tickets soon. This is the second year the auction is hosted on campus, and it is an evening of connection, fun, and giving that you don't want to miss.

  • Reviewed and collaborated on the most recent version of the school’s Institutional Identity initiative for the strategic plan

The Board of Trustees voted on the following:

  • Approving the Form 990 for the school. This is an annual financial document that all non-profits are required to submit to the Internal Revenue Service to demonstrate our adherence to policies our 501(c)(3) status.

At our next meeting, the Board of Trustees will:

  • Review the DEI initiative for the school’s strategic plan

  • Make final preparations for the gala

The work our volunteer board does is in support of the children and staff at Gardner, and we value the expertise and insights our board members bring to the conversations. Are you interested in learning more about how your support could impact Gardner? Reach out to Board Chair, Lori Cohen, and Head of School, Emily Davis, to learn more about board service and committee work that cultivates authentic learning through integrated experiences in a supportive community.

With thanks,

Celebrations of Learning this week!

It's almost time! Our students are excited to share their work with you and we welcome you to invite friends and family to our Celebration of Learning! We'll start in the Great Room for a whole school presentation, and then we invite you to tour the classrooms, your child's and others, in an open house format. At the end of the event, please make sure to confirm that you are bringing your child home with their Homeroom teacher, so we can account for dismissal of all of our students. After Care is available until 6:00 as usual, and if your child will be staying, please connect them directly with their homeroom teacher before leaving.

Wednesday, 3/29 12:00 pm
Mazama Celebration of Learning

The students can't wait to share their big production with their guests at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, March 29th. Families will meet in the Great Room before touring the classroom.

Thursday, 3/30 2:00 pm
K-6 Celebration of Learning

Join us in the Great Room for performances and introductions to the learning, and then visit the classrooms with your student(s) to see your child's work, and the learning that happens in all our classrooms!

This Friday

Pajama Day

Children are welcome to wear pajamas to school for a relaxing and cozy day before Spring Break! Check with your child's homeroom teacher for any extra details on events for the day.
Kittens and Kindness
Did you child come home last week asking for a kitten? They weren't the only ones!

We welcomed Second Chance Companions to our community meeting last Thursday, and before the presentation, students had a special chance to snuggle kittens and to learn about the work Second Chance Companions does in our community to support animals and pet owners. The students couldn't believe how much they had raised from Gardner Market to donate, but their work added up to a donation from the students to Second Chance Companions of $1,473.40- even more than we donated last year! These funds go to support the animals of Clark County, assisting in medical bills, food and shelter, and opportunties to connect pets to loving homes. Great job, Gardner students!

Learning in Action

Why Community Meetings Matter
An important tenet of progressive education, and a value we hold here at Gardner, is Community. At Gardner, this looks like having our kindergarten through 6th grade students interact regularly to form friendships, build understanding, and to feel the connection between all students and staff at Gardner. In the last few years, gathering together in community was challenging, but we're grateful we're back to regular community meetings.

So what happens at a community meeting? Our students gather in the Great Room and we start with some fun physical games and challenges to mix it up, then we come back together for important school-wide announcements and conversations. Our classrooms take turns leading or presenting to the other students, and kids get a chance to practice speaking skills, and listening skills, all together. We're building in traditions like singing our school-wide song, "I Love the Mountains" to close meetings, too. Stay tuned for opportunities for our parents to join community meetings, too!

Last Call for Yearbook!

One of the more popular features of our yearbook is a "Guess Who?" section where students can have their baby picture in our yearbook. If you would like to have your child's baby picture in this year's yearbook please send a digital baby photo to Jared Renfro at jrenfro@gardnerschool.org by March 31st.

(previous emails had an incorrect email address listed- our apologies!)
