Senator Jesse JamesCelebrates Bill Passages, Expresses Concerns

Madison – Senator Jesse James (R- Altoona) commented on the events of the senate floor today, including the passage of two bills and the Secretary of State Resolution:

“Doug Lafollette won the Secretary of State race by a razor-thin margin, less than one-third of one percent. His early retirement and the appointment of Sarah Godlewski to his position should make bright red alarm bells go off for the people of Wisconsin,” he said.

“Wisconsinites did not elect Sarah Godlewski to Secretary of State’s office. They did not elect her to a three-and-a-half year term. We insist that the Governor listen to the people and hold a special election for this position. This position is not the Governor’s. It is the people’s. Allowing the people to elect their Secretary of State is the right thing to do,” said James.

“Besides this issue, I am proud and honored to be the lead author on two bills that were both passed on the senate floor today,” he continued

“SB 76 will provide a needed clarification to our statutory definition of carjacking and help prevent sentencing discrepancies. This is a serious crime, one that differs than simply stealing a vehicle. Thank you to my colleague Rep. Spiros for leading this. We call on the Governor to sign this common-sense bill into law and help address carjackings across our state.

James continued, “Secondly, SB 21, passed unanimously today, raises the dollar amount value of personal property that an inmate can have in our state. I thank my colleague Rep. Paul Tittl for thinking of this after a prisoner in his district was not allowed to receive a Bible worth more than the $75 limit. This limit has not been updated in nearly 30 years, and this will be a common-sense economic adjustment,” James concluded.
