WBJS News, 23 March 2023

Despite it being a rather short school week, we have been working tirelessly to complete all necessary administrative tasks required before the end of the term. Our winter sports programme has kicked off with preparations and practices now underway.

Last weekend, our U13 rugby boys participated in the Wynberg Boys' High Standard Bank Rugby Festival. The boys played exceptionally well in their four games over the course of the weekend. Congratulations to WBHS for hosting such a successful event!

In our previous newsletter, we included a form regarding the upcoming trip to Grey in Qqeberha next term. Almost all boys from Grade 4 to Grade 7 who play rugby, hockey, or squash, as well as our cross country team and concert band members, will be travelling. We kindly ask any families
who have not yet completed the form to do so as soon as possible. We would like to note that by travelling on the bus to Grey, the experience will provide your son with the chance to bond with his teammates and develop a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that is essential for success in sports. They will also get to experience a new environment, meet new people, and broaden their horizons. As with WBHS, we would like all our boys to travel to Grey on the bus, thus creating a bond amongst each other that will hopefully last for the duration of the weekend. Having all learners arrive at the same time, allows us to give final instructions for the fixtures taking place on Friday and Saturday, and makes the billeting of boys go a lot quicker. In years past, we have found that boys travelling on their own have arrived late for matches and functions, and have also been incorrectly dressed. Boys are welcome to travel home with their parents on Sunday once the weekend has concluded.  This information will allow us to plan and make necessary arrangements.

Kindly note that school will be dismissed at 11h00 on Friday, 31 March 2023.

We would like to extend our warmest wishes to our Muslim families during the month of Ramadaan.

Mr Cedric Poleman
Headmaster
Visiting Author
This Term Grades R, 1, and 2 boys had a special visit from South African children’s author Kayla Diamond. Kayla introduced her book: “The Jellyfish Jiggle” and the latest one: “Little Kite’s Magic Flight”. She also read her picture book “Glow” which is a popular read in the library. It was evident that the boys enjoyed the reading and fun interaction with Kayla!
Grade 4
The Grade 4s learnt about landmarks, buildings, and services. Their assignment was to design a 3D map of their town using Icograms. These pictures show the beginning stages of some of their designs.

Art Club
If the winter sports programme affects your son’s Junior Art club afternoon, please email Mrs Townsend (mtownsend@wbjs.org.za).
Drama
We will perform The Taming of the Shrew at the annual Shakespeare Schools’ Festival on Monday, 22 May, at The District Six Homecoming Centre.

Auditions take place on Monday, 27 March, and Tuesday, 28 March, from 15h00 to 16h00. We encourage the Grade 7s to be part of this wonderful festival, as it is their last year at the junior school.
Early Act Club
The Early Act Club has seen a keen interest from Grades 5 to 7 this term. Boys were introduced to the values and mission of Early Act, and this mission of promoting goodwill and service to our immediate and larger community will be further explored during the course of the year. Our boys will be guided to recognise the worth of each and every individual. We look forward to all our service opportunities in the winter term ahead.
Easter Egg Collection
Our annual Easter Egg collection for charity ends next Thursday, 30 March. Donations have been arriving relatively slowly. We encourage our Wynberg family to support this drive and hopefully reach a target of 20 000 eggs. This is easily attained if every family makes a donation. To date, we have 3 705 marshmallow eggs to donate to charity and thank those families for their support. Last year we donated over 19 000 eggs and more than 23 000 in 2021 to various charities, including children's homes, hospitals, shelters, and homes for the aged. The class and boy bringing in the most eggs will be rewarded as an incentive.
Winter Extramural Programme
The Winter Extramural Programme commenced on Wednesday 22 March. Please use the link for the full programme.
Cross Country
Cross Country practices take place on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The meeting point is outside the gym hall at 06h45. We're looking forward to welcoming many aspiring cross country runners.
Hockey
This a reminder that all boys must have their own hockey sticks for practices and matches. Gum guards and shin pads are also compulsory.

Please take note of the following:
  • There will be practice for all U12 hockey boys on Friday, 24 March starting at 07h00.
  • There will be NO afternoon hockey practices for U13 and U12 boys next Wednesday, 29 March.
  • There will be NO hockey practices next Friday as it is the last day of the term.
Rugby
Well done to our U13s on their first match outing of the season - 4 matches at the Wynberg Rugby Festival at WBHS over the long weekend.

Click the images below for the individual match albums, or use the link for the full WBJS Festival album collection.
Squash
Squash practices take place on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Non-marking soled shoes are compulsory. If there is loadshedding, all boys will need to be collected from Oxford Street at the normal time that practice ends as we will remain at the Junior school. Wynberg Boys' High School is on the Claremont grid (5) for loadshedding.
PA News
The PA is solely dependent on the volunteering of our parents to do duty at the various fundraising events for it to be successful. This term, WBJS had 8 fundraising opportunity events. We want to thank all the parents who volunteered for the various events. Your assistance is and will always be greatly appreciated.

This year we have decided to incentivise the program by allowing the class with the most parent volunteers, to come to school in civvies for a day. The winning class for Term 1 2023 is Grade 7B, Mr Leverzencie's class. The boys, in Grade 7B only, will be allowed to come to school in Civvies on Wednesday 29 March 2023.

Congratulations Grade 7B parents!
Online Admissions
Admissions season has opened up and there have been a few glitches on the WCED online portal. We appeal to parents who have applied online for a younger sibling to advise us via email that they have made a sibling application. This information does not appear online and we are unable to see it. Please email us on admissions@wbjs.org.za
Individual & Class Photos
We sincerely appreciate your understanding regarding our photograph shoot being cancelled this week.

“That’s Me!” are rescheduled to be at our school on Monday 27th March 2023.

All boys are to come to school wearing their
FULL Summer uniform, including a blazer. Boys who have a practical day on Wednesday are to bring their Phys. Ed. clothes to school to change into after their photographs.
