The 2023 Winners of the Newman Exploration Travel Awards

The University Libraries are thrilled to announce the winners of this year’s Newman Exploration Travel Fund (NEXT) Award. The NEXT Award program is intended to support students, faculty, and staff at Washington University who wish to explore this vast world. This year’s awardees include three undergraduate students, three graduate students, and two staff members.

New Grant to Construct the History of Asian Americans in St. Louis

|
An interactive story map project to document the history of Asian Americans in St. Louis, Asia in St. Louis, has won a $10,000 grant from Missouri Humanities. Inspired by a Washington University history course, the project will be led by East Asian and Chinese studies librarian Joan Wang.

Shakespeare Day: Celebrating 400 Years of Shakespeare in Print

Join us as we celebrate the 400-year anniversary of William Shakespeare’s first folio—the first time his collected works were printed. View the exhibitions, Shakespeare in Hand and The Play's the Thing: Shakespeare in Special Collections, in addition to performances, a panel discussion featuring Washington University faculty, and other activities.

Arab American Writers in the Libraries

We mark National Arab American Heritage Month in April by highlighting books that explore the diverse cultures and experiences of Arab Americans. The book list was curated by AJ Robinson, subject librarian for Islamic studies, South Asian studies, and women, gender & sexuality studies.

The 2023 Neureuther Essay Award Winners

The Washington University Libraries are pleased to announce the undergraduate and graduate winners of the 36th annual Neureuther Student Book Collection Essay Competition. Named for Carl Neureuther ('40), the contest was designed to inspire reading for pleasure among students and to encourage the development of personal book collections.

Join us for a special National Preservation Week book club as we read the fascinating true story of The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu by Joshua Hammer. Book club will begin with a short presentation on preservation, followed by a discussion of the book.

The Maid of McMillan Screening

Come enjoy a screening of The Maid of McMillan, a silent, 15-minute film from 1916, written and produced by Washington University students in the Thyrsus Dramatic Club. The event will include discussions of grant-funded work to preserve the film, a history of the film, and WashU at the time, along with an update about activities of the still-active Thyrsus Club.
