US Census Bureau releases a set of data to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month - May 2023

In 1992, Congress established May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to coincide with two key milestones: the arrival of the nation’s first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and Chinese workers’ pivotal role in building the transcontinental railroad (completed May 10, 1869). The move expanded what had been Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week since 1978. In 2021, a presidential proclamation expanded this to include Native Hawaiians. This Facts for Features includes separate sections on the Asian and the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander populations, which the Office of Management and Budget in 1997 split into two race categories.

Mentorship Speed Network with Target employees at the Prairie Seeds Academy

.
Asian Media Access coordinated a speed-mentoring event with the youth at the Prairie Seeds Academy and invited several AANHPI corporate leaders from Target to join and provide mentorship to students. Each leader provided insight on their current positions at Target, the journey it took to get to where they are now, and advice they would give their younger self. Each leader came from different departments within the organization; this provided diverse levels of expertise and insight. Some of the roles included Auditing, Engineering, Law/Litigation, Software, and Product Management. Although there are standard roads to get to where they are, many leaders did not take the traditional paths to get to their current careers. There were leaders who thought they wanted to be doctors for success or some leaders who went into college completely undecided what they wanted to do next. There were even some who lived out another career.

China’s ascendancy as a dominant economic and political global power has been the subject of much scholarly and political debate. More specifically, China’s renewed interest in Africa continues to beg the question, what is China’s Africa strategy or Africa – China Strategy? Some scholars suggest that China’s strategic interests in Africa are purely economic, resource extraction, and exploitation, which has led to renewed concerns about neo-colonialism. Other questions raised include how this arrangement will benefit African countries engaged with China.

This course seeks to examine these issues and better understand how China’s engagement in Africa may have a consequential impact on the continent.
