Oxted BID marketing and management update

Hello everyone.
Easter is over and The Coronation is fast approaching!!

We would be very grateful to know your plans for the Coronation weekend ASAP so we can help you with promotion.  We It’s going to be a tricky weekend for businesses with regards to staffing and predicting footfall, and hard to know if people will simply stay at home or be out and about, but we’d like to try to make the most of it and fingers crossed for some spring sunshine!

Official Coronation Weekend “Royal" plans
Saturday 6th May 2023 - The Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey. The Coronation Service will take place in the morning at Westminster Abbey. To be televised and live-streamed on various channels.
Sunday 7th May 2023 - The Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle & The Big Lunch (community street parties etc)
Monday 8th May 2023 - The Big Help Out (volunteer-based community events)
We need to know who’s open & when

Please could you confirm if / when you will all be open over the Coronation Weekend (we are aware that some businesses may decide to close on some days) and if you have special plans so that we can help you publicise them and build up an overall picture of Oxted for the coronation.
Fyi you are under no obligation to offer Saturday as a day off as it is not an official Bank Holiday. However many businesses may decide not to open on this day in order to allow their staff to enjoy the day with their families.

Coronation Vibes in Oxted - Dust off your bunting!
  • We will be dressing the town and putting up Coronation lamp-post discs and flags in the run up to the Coronation weekend.
  • For those of you who requested a flag, we will put one up in the coming week. For those who already have a bracket, pole and flag from last year, please put the pole and flag back up - if you need any help to do this, let us know if you haven't already done so. FYI flags from the Jubilee can be hand-washed and re-used if they’ve been stored out of the elements and are still intact!
  • We would urge you all to get out your bunting again and theme your windows.
  • Entertainment availability is scarce, but if anyone knows any bands or musicians who would be happy to play in Oxted over the Coronation Weekend, even if it’s for a bit of an impromptu set, weather permitting, please let us know. It will all add to the community atmosphere.

It's a (Street) Party Atmosphere
  • We are not going to try to compete with the Oxted Food & Drink Festival at Master Park in terms of street party / road closures etc, but would be great to see Station Road East and West alive with street food offers and get businesses out onto the pavements to pull people through from the park into the town.
  • It would be great if all cafes, restaurants and bars (and shops if you fancy) could have some sort of street-based offer over the weekend, particularly Sunday (designated the official Big Lunch) to give a street party ambiance.
  • Will anyone be showing the Coronation itself or Coronation Concert at their premises?  If so, we could try to organise speakers to relay it onto the street.  Please let us know ASAP.

Coronation Trail

We will be running a special Coronation Digital High Street Safari (Similar to the Halloween Trail, but with Coronation theme) and need 10 hosts please ASAP.  Please email Sophie: marketing@loveoxted.co.uk.  You will not be required to do anything except pop a trail poster & QR code in your window for kids to zap with their phones.

The Big Help Out

The King's request is that the bank holiday Monday is themed The Big Help Out and St Mary’s and The Woodhouse Centre will be highlighting local volunteering opportunities.
We'd love to know what the Charity Shops will all be up to for this event, so please email marketing@loveoxted.co.uk.

FYI There will be a sort of Volunteer-themed Oxted Adventure hosted by St Mary's Oxted.
The Legion will kick things off on Monday 1st May and on Bank Holiday Monday 8th May St Mary's Church will host a volunteering fair in church and end with a BBQ for everyone in the churchyard.
The Woodhouse Centre is also getting involved.
Similar to the Advent Adventure Oxted, local families and Explorers/Scouts will host events over the week, so there will be a 6-7pm event each evening apart from Saturday 6 May. Venues TBC!
