Some of the ways that the Chinese community can benefit from the CalHOPE program are:

CalHOPE Warmline: You can call this warmline at (833) 317-HOPE (4673) to get immediate support from trained crisis counselors who can speak different languages, including Mandarin and Cantonese. You can also get referrals to other resources and services that can help you cope with your situation.

CalHOPE Connect: This is an online chat platform that allows you to communicate with trained counselors for free, confidential, and non-judgmental support. You can go to calhopeconnect.org to get emotional support and coping skills. The counselors can speak different languages, including Mandarin and Cantonese

CalHOPE Schools: This is a free program for California public schools that includes three parts: Building Resilience, Trusted Space, and Stories of Hope. These video tools and exercises can help reduce the stigma around mental health issues, create supportive environments, and expand the skills of adults and youth to identify and help young people in need of assistance. If you are a student, teacher, parent, or school staff member, you can access these programs at no cost and learn how to cope with anxiety, stress, trauma, and other challenges.

Together for Wellness: This is a mental health service for Californians that includes crisis counseling, community engagement, resource linkage, training, and education, etc. You can also find resources in different languages, including Chinese (simplified and traditional), on topics such as anxiety and stress relief, self-care, mindfulness, coping with grief and loss, and more.

《Dealing With Dad》

Movie Trailer:https://youtu.be/tHY8GNCHI2Y

“Dealing With Dad” is directed/written/produced by Tom Huang, a Chinese-American filmmaker, based on Huang’s and his father’s personal experience with depression. The film explores the complex dynamics of an Asian-American family that struggles with communication, expectations, and acceptance. The film portrays the serious mental health issue of depression, which affects not only individuals but also their loved ones. “Dealing With Dad” also shows how depression is influenced by cultural factors, such as shame and denial. The film challenges some stereotypes and assumptions about Asian families, such as strict fathers, obedient mothers, and obedient children. It also depicts the diversity and individuality of Asian-American experiences.

The film will be shown in various places in California:

April 16 at 3 pm and April 18 at 6:30 pm - New Parkway Theater in Oakland.

April 21 to 27 for a week at Harkins theaters in Cerritos and Chino Hills.

It is also planned to screen in San Jose in May and in San Francisco in late June (a specific time to be determined).

We look forward to the participation and support of Chinese Directors. Please keep in mind the challenges of Chinese families.

CARE Act

CARE Court

The CARE Act is a new law in California that creates a new pathway to deliver mental health and substance use disorder services to the most severely impaired Californians who too often suffer in homelessness or incarceration without treatment.

The CARE Court is a compassionate civil court process that provides participants with a clinically appropriate, community-based set of services and supports that are culturally and linguistically competent. It allows judges to order community-based outpatient treatment for people with serious mental illness who meet certain criteria, such as repeated hospitalizations or arrests.

The CARE Court is a first-in-the-nation framework to empower individuals suffering from untreated psychosis to get healthy1. It is supported by unprecedented funding from the state for addressing homelessness, mental health programs, and health and human services workforce

The Half Moon Bay shooting incident that occurred during chinese new year brought a huge impact to the Chinese community. MHACC has been providing mental health support to those in need after the incident.

The following article is from Chang Kiraly, who is Board President of NAMI San Mateo County Chapter. She says that Asians face unique challenges and barriers to accessing mental health care, such as stigma, cultural differences, language barriers, and lack of representation and resources.

She urges the community to take action to support the mental health and well-being of Asians, especially those who are directly or indirectly affected by the shootings. She suggests some ways to do so, such as:

- Checking in on your Asian friends and family and listening to their feelings and experiences without judgment or invalidation.

- Educating yourself and others about the history and diversity of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) and challenging stereotypes and myths.

- Speaking up and taking action against anti-Asian racism and discrimination whenever you witness or experience it.

- Donating to or volunteering with organizations that provide mental health services and advocacy for AAPI communities.

- Seeking professional help if you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or suicidal thoughts.
