Dear friends and partners,

Spring break is over and we are busier than ever making progress for our school communities! This week I was thrilled to see kids hard at work in their classes, learning new musical instruments, preparing for a student art show – and even in this cloudy week, I found a rainbow when we cut the ribbon on Wonderland Elementary’s new classroom building.

As we prepare to celebrate Earth Month with our upcoming School Beautification Day, we’re also continuing to invest in school greening and outdoor learning opportunities. Wonderland’s recent project included a learning garden for kids to discover nature, and we just presented a $100,000 grant for a greening project at Laurel Span School. Next week, the Board will direct funding for even more new projects and resources to help our students learn and grow in an innovative, safe, and joyful environment.

Onward,

In the Spotlight: Whitman High student gets published!
Local District West / Region WestViviana Cruz wants to pursue a career in counseling when she grows up, but her talents have been recognized early as an article she wrote about the youth mental health crisis was just published in the UCLA Medical Review! Whitman high schoolers worked with UCLA students as part of their Youth Writing Outreach Program, and Viviana's piece was chosen to appear alongside articles by college students and medical experts. Viviana also enjoys nature for its positive impact on mental health. We can't wait to see Viviana's own positive impact and accomplishments to come as she pursues a future in helping others!
