Top 4 Need-to-Knows from Council on April 3:
- Newmarket Council approved the 2023 Budget, which maintains service levels while balancing inflationary pressures and planning for the future. Town staff and Council worked together to find savings wherever possible and approved a fiscally responsible 5.5 per cent tax increase for the Town’s portion of property taxes. Total property tax bills include funding for the Town (39.7 per cent), York Region (41.4 per cent) and School Boards (18.9 per cent).
- Community volunteers have been appointed to Town Committees and Boards for the 2022-2026 Term of Council. The Town establishes Committees and Boards to make recommendations to Council regarding various matters from Newmarket’s heritage to facilitating accessibility for all persons with disabilities in the Town. Council sincerely appreciates all residents who served and continue to serve on Advisory Committees and Boards. Those who have been selected to serve on a Committee or Board will receive notification within the next few weeks.
Council is supporting significant enhancements and expansion of space for racquet sports, including tennis and pickleball, a reflection of the needs voiced by the community. These improvements are made possible through a strategic development agreement with Shining Hill.
- The future Keith Davis Tennis Centre at Shining Hill will substantially increase space to play tennis from six to 10 courts in the summer and three to eight bubbled courts in the winter. The Newmarket Tennis Club, a not-for-profit club, will continue to operate their summer club at the new facility, with Council endorsing a Town-operated model during the winter season. The Town-operated model will be introduced as a pilot program and staff will report to Council in the spring of 2025 for public input and consideration on the pilot project.
- Council is supporting the exponential growth of pickleball, one of North America’s fastest growing sports, by developing a long-term strategy. Council approved that funding through the Shining Hill Municipal Capital Facilities Agreement be used to construct a dedicated pickleball facility.
