April is Cesarean Awareness Month (CAM)

Cesarean Awareness Month 2023 Infographic. The full text of the infographic reads: "All About Cesarean Awareness Month. First section, History: Cesarean Awareness Month (CAM) was created by the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) in 1982 as a grassroots movement. With this, April focusses on all the topics surrounding cesareans, including (but not limited to): supporting cesarean recovery, advocating for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) as well as reducing preventable cesareans. Second section, Advocating for Family Wellness: This year's theme is, "You Have Options," which aims to highlight the rights of birthing people to make informed decisions during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Third second, Reproductive Justice: By advocating for family wellness, CAM also aims to support and advocate for reproductive justice. ICAN believes that all parents should be educated about all of the risks and benefits of any surgery or care. ICAN also supports a lift on VBAC bans in hospitals and aims to provide peer-support and education to prevent unnecessary cesareans, improve cesarean recovery, and more. Did you know? The rate of cesareans increased from 13.3% in 2018 to 32.1% in 2021. ICAN's Closest Chapters are in Burke, Chesapeake and Lynchburg Virginia. The hashtags for this year's campaign are CAM2023, ICAN advocate, Cesarean Awareness Month, Cesarean Stores, You Have Options. Fourth section, Get Involved: Want to support Cesarean Awareness Month (CAM) and/or International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN)? Here's what you can do! One, Check out your local ICAN chapter or start one of your own. Two, Support ICAN by purchasing their Hashtag CAM T-shirt. Three, stay tuned to ICAN's social media channels during the month of April and share, share, share! Four, Donate to ICANs Cesarean Awareness Month Fundraiser. Five, Become a month or one-time donor. Five, join ICANs network as a member for special access to webinars and more!"

An orangutan at a Virginia zoo finally learned how to nurse her new baby after a breastfeeding zookeeper showed her how it was done

Im not crying... you're crying! An orangutan, who was separated from her mother early on and who did not have "mom friends," was provided support by the zoo staff to prepare for welcoming her new baby. One of the zookeepers on her team also happened to be a new mother herself, and used her knowledge and her experience of lactation to teach the new mama how to breastfeed her little one! A wonderful story of breastfeeding and new parent support - something we all need!
