SCIENTISTS AT DUT CONDUCT WATER QUALITY TESTS AT SIX DURBAN BEACHES

The Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology (IWWT) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) conducted water quality tests at some of Durban’s popular beach destinations on Wednesday, 05 April 2023. The results from the six beaches under evaluation were varied, with one Durban beach showing critical levels of E.coli in the water that was sampled. 

Professor Faizal Bux, Director of the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology at DUT, confirmed that four beaches, Addington, Bay of Plenty, Umhlanga and Virginia had acceptable levels of E.coli in the water and tested as “Ideal.”

THE FIRST WINNERS OF THE LIVING VALUES FRAMEWORK COMPETITION ARE…….

The Durban University of Technology (DUT)’s Human Capital Services Unit recently introduced the DUT Living Values Framework competition which was open to the DUT community at large. The competition was accessible from 30 March 2023 to 04 April 2023 on the DUT website and on emails.

DUT is yet to launch its ENVISION2030 strategy Living Values Framework. On 26 August 2022 the University unveiled its ENVISION2030 DNA Helix monument and Time capsule. The DNA Helix highlights the University’s goals for the decade ahead.

DSI-NRF COE-MASS HONOURED DUT’S DR AIBINU WITH AN AWARD FOR THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE CENTRE IN 2022

The Department of Science and Innovation – National Research Foundation (DSI-NRF) Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoE-MaSS) honoured the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Dr Mathew Aibinu; Post-Doctoral Research Fellow; Research and Postgrad Support, with an award for the contribution to the Centre in 2022. The award ceremony was held during the 9th Birthday celebration of the CoE-MaSS event that was held at the University of Witwatersrand on Friday, 31 March 2023.

The DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences CoE-MaSS was established on the 1st of April 2014 to bring together the areas of research excellence in the Mathematical Sciences and Statistics in South Africa. The CoE-MaSS promotes knowledge and human capital development in areas of strategic importance to South Africa.

YOUNG DUT ENTREPRENEUR DREAMS BIG

Durban University of Technology (DUT) aims on producing adaptive graduates who are creative, innovative and entrepreneurial. Noluthando Shezi, (22), a second-year student in Fashion and Textiles from Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, has done just that by starting up a thrilling donuts business called Nolu’s Donuts.

In 2020 during the COVID19 lockdown, Ms Shezi started watching videos on YouTube of how to make donuts, through her keen observation skills and an entrepreneurial mindset, she decided to come up with her own unique recipe that suited Nolu’s Donuts. Nolu’s Donuts is a young, authentic female black owned baking business, which started with the love and passion of baking and pastry.

DUT LIBRARY HOSTS ITS ANNUAL STAFF RECOGNITION AWARDS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Library hosted the 2022 staff recognition awards to acknowledge and appreciate library staff for their hard work and dedication. The event was held on Friday, 31 March 2023 at Elangeni, Maharani Hotel.

The DUT’s Librarian: Marketing and Communication, Romeo Matumba facilitated the event. He kept all the attendees captivated with his gentle programme-directing skills and he also shed light on the purpose of the day.

Dr Malefetjane Phaladi, Director: Library services, delivered his welcoming remarks, and further reflected on the library achievements for the year 2022.

Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently approved the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability.
