Help spread that word that the club invites high school girls to a "Dream It, Be It" (DIBI) career exploration workshop on Saturday, April 29 from 8:30 am -- 2:30 pm in Loomis. This free program with lunch included will be held at the Blue Anchor Annex adjacent to The Blue Goose Event Center, 3550 Taylor Rd. Loomis. Learn more about DIBI on our website and share our posts on social media @SILoomis. Download PDF of Flyer for the DIBI Career Workshop on April 29.

Girls must reserve their spots by April 24 by sending an email to the club (info@soroptimistloomis.com).

Club volunteers are needed to be presenters, co-presenters, helpers for activities, behind-the-scenes and set up/take down. Volunteers must turn in a background check to Elizabeth by April 15.

Soroptimist Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls introduces young women to careers and helps them match their interests to education and career paths.  During lunch, the girls will be inspired by a panel of career women. Contact Elizabeth to sign up to help.

Seniors Enjoyed Festive St Patrick’s Meal

The St. Patrick’s Day Lunch at the Senior L.I.F.E Center on March 16 was a wonderful celebration! Peggy and her Soroptimist sous chefs made a delicious meal of corned beef, cabbage, boiled potatoes, carrots and rolls, followed by cupcakes for dessert. We served the meals, sat with the seniors and visited while having our own lunch, and then worked to get everything cleaned up. Many seniors shared their appreciation with a heartfelt “thank you.”
Club Delivers Education & Fun to Acres of Hope

Rae sends a big THANK YOU to all the lovely Soroptimist ladies who joined us at Acres of Hope on March 25. “I appreciate all those who dedicated a day to bring a little joy to the families of Acres of Hope,” said Rae. “Based on the smiles, I know that we helped make a positive impact on their journey.”

We all made and shared clay sculptures of something that brings us joy, the families played bingo games to win prizes of their choice and served a lunch of pizza, salad and cookies. The club thanks Papa Murphy’s and Safeway on Granite Drive, Rocklin, for donating the pizza and cookies.

Penny’s service dog-in-training, Kasey, gave lots of tail wags and doggy kisses to the families, especially the children, and was loved by all. After lunch, the ladies and older children listened to a nutritional presentation from Carol about reading labels and the basics of good nutrition. They also sampled 0% fat, plain yogurt that had been mixed with fruit and cinnamon the night before to improve the flavor, and heard the difference between plain yogurt and the amount of sugar and chemicals in regular yogurt and “diet” yogurt.

The last part of the day was a Tea and Chocolates Party organized by Becky and Mechelle. While some members played with the children, the ladies relaxed with a stress-release exercise led by Mechelle. Then, based on etiquette questions submitted by Acres of Hope, we discussed several of them while enjoying the tea and chocolates. Ralene also shared some good etiquette information with the ladies. We adjourned to Loomis Basin Brewery for refreshments and lunch/dinner for some of us.

President's Message

I am so proud of Loomis Basin Soroptimist club. Our Business Meeting last night (April 5) was well attended by all.  Several great ideas were shared, positive reviews of completed programs, compassion for one another and, of course, laughter that filled a room.

As you go about your day, take time to daydream creative ideas that support our mission.  We will continue to grow within ourselves and as a club with our passion and enthusiasm.

We rise by lifting others,
President Rae
Meet Sharla
Sharla is a financial advisor and self-employed businessperson for Edward Jones. She was working for Edward Jones in Rocklin when a Loomis position opened, so she transferred. Sharla says that she adores the Edward Jones building in Loomis. As a newer local businesswoman, she met several women who were members of Soroptimist International Loomis Basin, attended a few meetings and decided our mission was important to her. She joined in 2015.

Of our many Soroptimist projects, Sharla loves the Dream It, Be It Program. She enjoys interacting with the young women taking the course and taught a couple of the modules. Awards Night is also a highlight. "To me, our whole purpose is our ability to support women in the community," said Sharla. "The scholarship event is one of the best nights of the whole year."

Sharla and her husband, Butch, have been together since 2009. They are both self-employed, with Butch managing his full-service pool repair company, Pool Shark. They live on acreage in Rio Linda and have three adult children in their blended family. Rylee is presently attending William Jessup University, Justin is an Air Force Tech Sergeant serving in South Korea and Billy recently graduated with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Sharla says she and Butch are playing catch-up with their businesses after spending a week in Maui with family for their tenth anniversary, followed by six days in Clearwater, Florida. Sharla also works out 5-6 days per week at a gym.  When not working, they enjoy spending time with their two active boxers.
Training to Help with Club Social Media

It is easy to volunteer when you’ve got training. Babette, SNR Public Awareness Chair, Sierra Nevada Region, is offering a zoom social media workshop on April 24 at 6 pm.

Our club is seeking more members on the marketing committee to help with social media promotion and you can learn much of what you need at this seminar. Follow the zoom link for the seminar:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9819094337. And, talk to Karen FM about how you can help the club with social media.
Register for 47th Annual Sierra Nevada Region Conference

All club members are encouraged to attend the Soroptimist Sierra Nevada Region (SNR) conference on June 2-4 at the Atlantis Casino Spa Resort. Have fun enjoying activities, learn more about Soroptimist, be inspired by speakers, make new friends and get the weekend away with the gals.

According to Alaire, this event and the training weekend in June are amazing. "The conference provides opportunities to get the 'bigger picture' of Soroptimist and see all the wonderful things this organization does," said Alaire.

How Soroptimist Invests in Dreams

As a global organization, Soroptimist International of the America's (SIA) work aligns closely with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on women and girls.  Of the 17 goals outlined in the SDGs, the Soroptimist Dream Programs directly contribute to five goals:

  • SDG#1 -- End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
  • SDG#4 -- Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
  • SDG#5 -- Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
  • SDG#8 -- Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
  • SDG#10 -- Reduce inequality within and among countries.

Because quality education, more than any other intervention, holds the greatest potential to transform the lives of women and girls, Soroptimist developed the Dream Programs:

Live Your Dream Awards are cash awards for women, who are the primary financial providers for their family, to return to school or continue their education. SIA has distributed more than $35 million in funding to over 35,000 women since the program began in 1972.

SIA developed the Dream It, Be It career exploration program after years of research to understand what girls needed to secure a successful future. More than 72,000 girls have received support, encouragement, and guidance from women in their community since the program launched.

Soroptimist clubs Investing in Dreams with 28,000 volunteers in 1,300 different communities. Because our programs are delivered by clubs locally, our volunteers are uniquely situated to respond to the needs of their own communities.
