SPRING FUNDRAISER UPDATE:

Thanks again to all the Elm parents for your support during the Spring Fundraiser. We'd especially like to express our gratitude to our volunteers, who worked so tirelessly- their hard work has really paid off. We are overwhelmed with joy to announce that our final calculations show we raised over $70,000

We would love parents to join future PTO meetings to help make decisions and come up with new ideas for next year. There are still a few open positions - if you'd like to learn more about how you can get involved, please attend the next PTO meeting on Friday, May 5, 9AM at Elm School in the Faculty Lounge.

Parent Input on 2023-2024 Class Placement

The planning process for the 2023 - 2024 school year has begun! This is a lengthy process, and one we take very seriously. There are many factors we consider as we develop our schedule and class lists. We work with your child’s current teachers as well as specialists (reading specialist, differentiation specialists, resource teachers, and art, music, and PE staff) to create class lists conducive to learning.  We take into account your child’s academic, social, and emotional needs. Our goal is also to create equitable classes in terms of size, instructional support, gender, etc.

As our partners, we welcome you to share your perspective on your child’s placement for the coming school year. Providing this information about your child is optional. If you choose to share your input, please utilize this form, as it is our official way to collect this important information from you.

IAR Schedule- Grades 3,4,5 Only

During the month of April, your child will participate in the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). Elm School will administer IAR April 3-April 21, 2023. A schedule with specific dates can be found below. However, please note that make-up assessments will be taken throughout the entirety of the window.

The IAR is designed to measure students' current performance in relation to the Illinois Learning Standards for mathematics and English language arts. The standards set high expectations focused on critical thinking and real-world application of knowledge. The results from state-wide testing can be a helpful tool in measuring your student’s success in school, but are just one of the many ways readiness for the next grade is tracked.

This year, there are five subtests in total: two reading and three math. Results of the assessment are shared the following year with families.

Assessment Schedule:

4/10: 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Math

4/11: 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Math

4/13: 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Math

4/17: 3rd Grade ELA

4/18: 3rd Grade ELA

NWEA Schedule

We want to communicate our plans for administering the Spring MAP assessment to students enrolled in grades 1-5. The MAP window is scheduled for April 24th, 2023-May 5th, 2023.

Why administer MAP?
Our District uses the data from this assessment in a variety of ways. In the classroom, it provides teachers with a means for monitoring student growth in reading and mathematics over time.  At the District and building levels, MAP data help us set goals and evaluate initiatives.  Finally, MAP will continue to be one of several indicators used to identify the impact of the pandemic on our students’ achievement and learning.

Assessment Schedule:

4/24: 1st ELA

4/25: 2nd ELA

4/26: 3rd ELA

4/27: 1st Math

4/28: 2nd Math

5/2: 5th ELA, 4th Math

5/3: 3rd Math

5/4: 5th Math, 4th ELA

Course Placement for 2023-24
Specific recommendations for math placement at grades 3-8 as well as middle school language arts and social studies placement for 2023-24 were approved at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 19, 2022. MAP scores are included, in conjunction with other data, in the requirements for students to move into advanced courses in all three subject areas. Course placement requirements can be found on our website at: https://www.d181.org/departments/learning/placement

Preparing for MAP
A student who is well-rested, well-fed, and has a positive attitude about assessment is best prepared for testing. You can help your child do his or her best by considering these tips:

  • Make sure that your child is in school and on time on test days.

  • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before each day of testing.

  • Remind your child that this assessment is only one measure. Emphasize that you have confidence in his or her ability to do the best job possible.

  • Remind your child to listen to the directions and read each question carefully during testing.

Communication of Student Scores
We will continue the use of Skyward to communicate your child’s scores on MAP. This will allow families to receive their student’s results more quickly. An email will be sent alerting families when scores are visible. Directions for viewing results will be included in this follow-up email. Should a paper copy of the report be preferential, please contact your child’s principal.

DARE- 5th Grade Only

DARE is back! The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program through Burr Ridge Police Department begins Monday, April 10, 2023 through student's PE time and will run for 8 weeks. It has been a special program for 5th graders.

The D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program is more than a “Just say No” program. DARE has evolved into a program about teaching students how to make wise decisions and providing them with tools to resist and refuse peer pressure. The objective of the program is to give students skills they will use for the rest of their lives.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the DARE program, please feel free to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher.
