NEW VALDEZ HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL NAMED
Gayle Brown has officially accepted the position of Principal at Valdez High School, pending board approval, following her site visit last Monday. Superintendent Tim Bauer said Brown comes highly recommended by the student interview committee as well as a diverse group that conducted a second interview. “Gayle brings with her a lot of energy and she is beyond excited to join our team here in Valdez,” said Bauer. STATE TROOPERS WARN PUBLIC: LETHAL BATCH OF ILLEGAL DRUGS
The Alaska State Troopers have responded to several suspected overdoses this week in the Mat-Su area. Law enforcement believe that a lethal batch of illegal drugs is currently circulating in the Mat-Su, causing the rise in overdose events. At this time, at least three people are believed to have died as a result of drugs likely containing fentanyl, and at least 11 other overdose emergencies have been reported to law enforcement, since April 1. 2023 STUDDED TIRE REMOVAL DEADLINE EXTENDED
Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner James Cockrell issued an emergency order extending the statutory deadline to remove studded tires from vehicles operating on Alaska roadways.
Alaskans living above the 60 North Latitude line, including Valdez and all portions of the Sterling Highway, may use studded tires on Alaska roadways until May 15, 2023. Read more

The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) surpassed Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) to claim the slot for third busiest airport in the world for Cargo. In 2022, 3,461,603 metric tons of cargo transited ANC’s runways.
