Community Build at Legacy Park

Decatur Makers has a deep tradition of Community Builds that we are happy to continue!  This March, we partnered with Wild Nest Bird Rehab to construct and install twenty bluebird houses around Legacy Park.  From measuring (twice), sawing, and building in the DM Woodshop to drilling and installing on a beautiful spring day in Legacy Park, this project was full of goodwill and cheer!

We'd like to send out a big THANK YOU to Dave Butler for bringing the project to us, Tommy Barrow and his family for taking the lead, all the volunteers who helped along the process, and our Executive Director Kalia Morrison, who always has her eyes out for the next project and isn't afraid to roll up her sleeves and see the project through!

Youth Outreach Highlights

We were happy to host a GVP field trip to the space recently.  Global Village Project serves refugee girls aged 11-18 with a mission to reactivate their educations.  During their visits, the girls learned how to turn a bowl on a wood lathe and how to use the dremel scroll saw.  They had a great time learning new skills!

Every month, our Youth Outreach Manager takes a STEAM project on a field trip to Decatur Housing Authority, where kids engage in after-school learning fun.  This month, Jennifer took advantage of some early warm weather and brought a tie-dye activity.  Everyone had fun creating their own tie-dye t-shirts and some great memories!

Thank you to our volunteers who help these programs flourish!

Class Highlights

We have two special classes in April, that don't come around very often!

Wood & Glass will run April 21st & 22nd, as a collaboration with Fused LIght Studio.  Participants will build a wooden box Friday night and then design and create a glass top for the box Saturday afternoon.  We held this class in October and were excited to see the participants start out as strangers and leave as creative friends.

Build Your New 3D Printer will give participants the chance to assemble their own new 3D printer.  We will build in community on the evening of April 28th, run a print, return the morning of the 29th to collect the results, and then everyone will take their printers home.  We have found that nothing builds confidence in 3D printing like constructing your own machine and nothing builds confidence in constructing like having a group to encourage you through it!
