Next School Advisory Council (& Title I) Meeting
is Tuesday, April 11th @ 6pm (Zoom)

The School Advisory Council (SAC) meets every other month to advise the school leadership and build an active community of engaged families. All are welcome and valued voices, including students, teachers, and staff. Please register here and include any questions or topics you'd like to have discussed at the meeting. Folks who just want to listen (camera off, cooking dinner, etc.) are more than welcome to do that! Topics for this month include: updated from Principal Jenkins, Title I Family Engagement activities, and SY 23-24 SAC Leadership Elections. Email AdaireSchoolAdvisoryCouncil@gmail.com if you have questions.

Science Fair recap

Our first ever Science Fair was a huge success! All of our student participants did an amazing job and we are so proud of their effort and creativity. Special thanks to staff member Mrs. Kimberly Beall for coordinating this fair in partnership with parent volunteers Lindsey Li and Jamie Banks.

Curriculum spotlight

3rd Grade ELA

In the Reading Workshop we are reading "Because of Winn Dixie" and studying character traits. The students are not only identifying traits but digging deeper to understand why the characters act the way they do, using those traits to predict what they might do later in the book, and noticing how these traits contribute to how their characters face adversity.

In writing, the students are busy getting ready for the PSSA. They are taking practice tests with reading, writing, and grammar. These tests include released questions from previous PSSA tests. Tricks, tips, and test taking strategies are being taught as well!

5th Grade

The 5th grade will be diving into Advocacy and Argument this month in Reader's and Writer's workshop.  We will continue reading and discussing Brown Girl Dreaming. In addition, we just finished writing lessons with the Spells Writing Lab and look forward to seeing our narratives published later this year!

In 5th grade math students are shifting to decimal multiplication using place value strategies. Rather than using big, complicated numbers, focus on developing understanding. How can they use what they know about whole number multiplication to support decimal multiplication? How can they use models and place value to help them to multiply? How can they round and estimate to ensure their answers are reasonable? Students will fluently multiply decimals using the standard algorithm next year, so this year is more about developing number sense and conceptual understanding.

Naglieri for 2nd grade

Naglieri for 2nd grade

2nd graders will complete the Naglieri (NNAT3) on April 13th or 14th. This assessment is language-free and asks students to identify patterns.  There are 48 items that the students complete on their chromebook. Since it is a nonverbal test, it may reveal strengths related to problem-solving, critical thinking, and strong visual learning skills.  Reading is not assessed during this assessment. Although practice is not necessary, students can practice solving puzzles similar to the Naglieri online at the following sites:  GeoPatterns and Fuzz Bugs.

Zoom With STEM Professionals

Adaire’s 6th grade classes (202 & 208) had the opportunity to Zoom with real-life STEM professionals and graduate students through the “Explore STEM Philly'' initiative. We were matched with engineering students and alumni from Texas A&M University’s “Women in Science and Engineering” (WISE) program. Our students learned about engineering career pathways and asked some great questions!

If you have STEM career experience and/or advice you would like to share with our students, email Mr. Lewis at alewis3@philasd.org.
