April Meeting

Jim Busby, RPT
Jim is a longtime technician, and known throughout the Guild as an experienced teacher and tool nut.

Class: String Prep

Description: Jim will be demonstrating he preferred method of string prepping and why this is essential for all pianos, but especially for newer pianos.  It is also effective for replacing and stabilizing new strings.  Few people know about this process, as it uses a tool many have never seen.  We will have some hands on, and a valuable handout as well.  Who know what else Jim will bring...

Date: 4/20/23
Time:  7:00pm
Location:  Baldassin Pianos, 441 12300 a500 Draper, Utah  84020
In Review

In our March meeting Barbara Ellis gave a presentation about tuning techniques.  Giving everyone an understanding of the process of tuning and all the challenges to overcome to achieve a stable tuning.
~
How to tell if the string and pin are equalized?  When you lean the lever to the left. Do the beats speed up or slow down?  When you lean the lever to the right. Do the beats speed up or slow down?  When you release the lever it should settle quietly in the middle.
~
Inharmonicity: The nodes create the slightest amount of shrinking (quiet zone) of the octaves. Thus, ‘actual’ deviates from ‘theoretical’. To compensate for this shrinking you must expand the octaves slightly in order for 3rds (wide), 4ths (wide), 5ths (narrow) & 6th (wide) to all fit within the octave. We use an equal temperament, so all intervals fit within the octave without any one interval sounding offensive.
