Overwhelmed Leader

Dear Reader
 
This past week I had a fabulous experience in one of my EOS sessions. When we started with this particular organization, one of the key members on the leadership team was feeling overwhelmed. She felt this was just something else that we're adding on top of her already over-loaded workload. She was there, but she wasn't happy when we spoke about the accountability chart, and all the roles that she had to play. She became overwhelmed. When we asked her the question whether she really wants the job, she said, no, she doesn't want the job.

I spoke to her and said, Let's just hang tight and let's work through the system. Let's start bringing in the magic of EOS, where we simplify our approach and where we put barriers around your job so that you know what you're doing. You can delegate the extra stuff, and we can find you help for those essential things that you simply don't have the capacity for. She reluctantly agreed and the process continued on.

This past week it was our third session together. She was a different person. She showed up with a big smile, she was participating with everyone, she was involved in everything. She was just a light at the table all of a sudden, not that she wasn't the light before, but this is really shining brightly now.

The beauty of this is that she could see that we're all working together to share the load, to lighten the load where someone is overburdened. We are putting boundaries around what we need to do and simplify what we need to do. We can also delegate away those essential skills to help someone else to elevate in their position.

She is a different person and she is now looking forward to the next session. She's also taking charge of a very important part of the strategic direction this organization is going into.

So think about this: Where in your work, or in your team does this happen? How many people feel overwhelmed? How many people do not want their jobs? Do you really want your job, or do you also feel like it's just too much? You have no control over it, and you don't want to be part of the whole thing.
