"No One Drowns
in the Beautiful Lake."
Jack Grapes
The world wants your book!
And if you're waiting for other people to care about it, or to give you permission to write it, I want to tell you to STOP WAITING.
Who cares about what other people think? Not you. You're a writer. You know what? Writers write.

So, write!

"How?" You ask. "I don't know how to write it. I don't know where to start."
"Start," I say, "where you are!"
Simple as that. Start where you are. Start with a word. Followed by another. Then another, and then some more...just start.
"I did that," you say. "I wrote and wrote and wrote, and nothing happened."
"Good," I say. "Don't stop. Keep writing."

I know how it feels. You're writing one sentence after another and another. You're what, ten sentences in, and you have NOTHING. A big fat goose egg of a zero, and now you feel as if what you're writing is going nowhere. You think you're going to drown. Like you forgot how to swim. Or you never even learned how. But, no one drowns in this beautiful lake. The writing, your words, won't let you go under. In fact, they will keep you safe. They are your life raft. Keep writing. You will stay afloat.

Stop worrying and write.
Seriously, what are you waiting for?
Approval?
To be 'good enough'?
To be better than that other writer?
To be perfect?
Well, guess what? You're good enough now. And if you write you will get better—just practice. But don't practice writing like a writer. Practice writing like yourself.

The other writers who are better than you. The Hemingways, Didions, Baldwins, yes, they are better than you or me. That's okay. What can we learn from them? Lots of writers are better than me. Such is life. That doesn't stop me from being the best writer I CAN BE.

The more you write, the more you read, and the better a writer you will become.

Do I really need to address perfection? Here's my Found Voices™ Podcast episode about perfection.

The point is to keep writing. No matter what. If you are drawn to the page, there's a reason. There's something that you have the desire to express, EVEN if you aren't quite sure what it is. If you write, it will be written.
Good for you!
