Safety Spotlight

Tornado & Severe Storm Safety

An illustration of a tornado. April showers bring May flowers - but they also sometimes bring severe weather to the Midwest, including tornadoes.

Know where to go: Take refuge in the lowest and/or most interior spaces available such as a basement, interior room, or inside hallway. Avoid doors, windows, and outside walls.

Know what to take: Have a battery-operated flashlight and radio, if possible, and use a mobile phone to stay informed or communicate with family and friends.

Know the difference between a Watch and a Warning:
  • Tornado Watch = Be aware; conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop.
  • Tornado Warning = Take action and seek shelter immediately; a tornado or funnel cloud has been spotted, or radar indicates one is possible.
Know what to do afterward: Get out safely if your building has sustained damage, and be aware of any new hazards the storm creates.

The 2023 National Library Week is next week, April 23-29! In honor of National Library Workers Day (25 April), the Staff Engagement Committee invites you to celebrate your contribution to the Libraries.

With your supervisor's approval, step away from your desk for 30 minutes of self-care. Take a walk, have a cup of tea, meditate, or cuddle with your pet. We will also be delivering treats to each of the Libraries!

Volunteering for Weekend Commencement Ceremonies

The 2023 Commencement Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 15. Washington University in St. Louis relies on faculty and staff volunteers to make commencement successful each year. As a thank you for volunteering to work a weekend commencement ceremony, you will receive one additional paid vacation day to be used by the end of the fiscal year.

Thank you for helping to make this year's commencement a success! Please see below for details on how to request and record this time off:

Non-Exempt Employees (biweekly)

  • Non-exempt employees are paid for hours worked and must record all time worked. Time worked during commencement should be entered as Regular Time.
  • If the commencement time worked in combination with the employee's work schedule will result in overtime, the employee must seek approval from their manager before incurring overtime.
  • When a non-exempt employee who worked a weekend commencement ceremony (i.e., an unpaid day they are not typically scheduled to work) uses the additional paid vacation day, they should enter the day off as "HR approved paid time off," and it will not reduce their vacation balance.

Exempt Employees (monthly)

  • Exempt employees are paid a set amount per pay period that does not vary based on hours worked. Working at commencement will not add to or subtract from regular monthly pay.
  • Exempt employees who work a weekend commencement ceremony should work with their manager to determine when they can take an extra vacation day. It can be taken during the same work week but is optional. It should be recorded in Workday as "HR approved paid time off," and it will not reduce their vacation balance.
  • Employees must request permission from their manager to work at commencement. The university does not provide employees special pay such as additional or bonus pay for working commencement.
