WHAT DO BUTTERFLIES AND KITES HAVE IN COMMON?

They fill the sky with joy and beauty and speak to the value and importance of viewsheds.

FUN FACT: Did you know viewsheds at CA State Parks are protected. That’s true for LA State Historic Park.

The more you know!

Our peeps at Clockshop are off to the races with the Bigger, Better, Bolder 3rd Annual Community and Unity People’s Kite Festival on Saturday, May 13th from 2 - 6 pm

Meet us on EARTH DAY!

We are so ready! We’re just 2 weeks away!

Project Monarch LA, a project of ADCCLA, our friends and partners at CA State Parks at LA State Historic Park, California State Parks Foundation, Monarch Watch, and LA River State Parks Partners are amping up for April 22nd

ON THE AGENDA

  • Expert advisors led by Antonio Sanchez, Nursery Manager for the National Park Service (NPS) Native Plant Nursery, will be helping to identify what to weed and what not to weed. That is always the question! We will help you identify baby, native, narrowleaf milkweed.

FUN FACT: Milkweed was systematically eradicated as a weed which, along with human intervention, led to the Monarchs being placed on the international endangered list.

  • We will dig holes and lightly water to loosen and make the soil receptive to our milkweed pants.

FUN FACT: Narrowleaf milkweed thrives in full sun in dry to medium well-drained soils. It does well in poor, dry, gravelly soils and is highly drought tolerant when established.

  • If you don’t want to get your hands dirty with soil, you can get them dirty with art supplies! Project Monarch LA, ADCCLA and the Garden School Foundation will be provide tools to create some art for the project website! We’ll add your name, and get your art uploaded and you can take your original home with you!

FUN FACT: Art can raise awareness of the dangers facing a species and help promote its conservation.

  • We’re planting some milkweed!

  • Our amazing Cal Parks Foundation & LARSPP sponsors, REI and Sweetgreen will be bringing their awesome team, some swag and some great food!

ALL ABOUT MONARCHS

Monarch butterflies live and breed throughout North America feeding on milkweed their favorite host plant. Monarch butterflies live primarily in meadows, grasslands and along roadsides, throughout North America.

While most monarchs live only a few weeks, their babies emerge in the late summer and early fall and the new generation starts their migratory journey. Monarchs are born travelers and live up to nine months to ensure they get where they are going. Its believed monarchs use the changing weather and the position of the sun to know when it’s time to start their long journey.
