Seed Saving Workshop
Susan Delattre is a self-described “lifelong gardener”. She lived on a beautiful south-facing hillside in Vermont and grew food for 25 years. During this time, she took a summer-long course with a professional seed saver. The teacher had an entire garden devoted to saving seeds.
“There’s a lot to learn about seed saving” Susan told me—some plants are easier to save seeds from than others. There is a way you need to collect them and dry them. (You also need to make sure to collect some kinds of seeds before the wind does!) “If you like gardening, I bet you’ll like seed saving… It lets you get to know your plants really well.” Her passion is infectious. “You’re helping the plants get all the way through the season to harvesting the seeds…It's an intimate way to get to be with plants—you’re nurturing them through.” As somebody with a black thumb who spent too much money on seeds last year, I know that I will attend her free class to learn how to save seeds and grow my own plants for nearly free next year.
Saturday, May 6
general introduction and helping participants plan their project, providing examples of heirloom seed catalogs
Mid-August
demonstration of how to harvest seeds
how to store the seeds once they are dried and cleaned
Late September, Early October
bring seeds saved and swap
talk about successes and challenges and what everyone has learned
What will we grow out next year from our saved seeds?
All workshops will be held at The Nokomis Square Community Room (5015 35th Ave South 55417).
Please note that the later workshop dates will change due to weather—we all know how unpredictable Minnesota can be, and the plants should be able to have enough time to make the seeds we’re saving!
If you have any questions, please email Susan at: sbdelattre@yahoo.com.
The Giving Garden is Back!
We are excited to begin another season supporting the Nokomis East Giving Garden! Last year these awesome gardeners were able to provide almost 500 lbs of produce to the food shelf for our neighbors. This year we are hoping to grow even more!
The garden will be continuing with Saturday work days and watering crew rotation. They have have a new opportunity; to harvest beautiful produce.
Volunteeropportunities include:
Saturday Workdays: Usually held on the 2nd Saturday of the Month, starting at 9am. They can include seeding, cultivating, mulching. This is a big day to get stuff done in the garden.
Watering Crew: A rotation of people that water the garden. Past years have had enough participants to rotate every 3 weeks. Approximately 1 hour every 3 weeks.
Harvesting: Picking fruit and vegetables and getting them ready for the food shelf. Monday late afternoon picking/ Tuesday morning picking and delivery to the food shelf.
They are hoping to have enough people to have a rotation of 1 day every other week. Approximately 1-2 hrs.
Garden Committee: Interested in planning the garden? Join the crew at one of their meetings every 3rd Tuesday at 6:30pm.
Community Resources
We believe it's important to keep everyone up to date on what resources our community has. Below is a list of Community Resources that you might find helpful.
Affording Heat: The Energy Cents Coalition can help you pay utility bills, replace furnaces, boilers, or water heaters, add insulation, or replacing your refrigerator.
