The Civic Engagement Office is hiring! We have several student staff work-study positions open for 2012-2013. With most of our staff graduating, we are looking forward to building a new team to work with our programs across campus. Student staff lead Lunch Buddies, Middle School Mentoring, Colleges Against Cancer, Alternative Spring Break, and our volunteer coordination efforts. Documentary Screening and Discussion
We Still Live Here: As Nutayunean

In honor of the MLK Holiday, the Civic Engagement Office will be hosting a screening of the documentary "We Still Live here: As Nutayunean". This one hour documentary details the efforts of the Wampanoag Nation to revive its language more than a century after the death of the last native speaker. Career Tour with Nonprofit Organizations

What exactly is a nonprofit organization? What jobs can a liberal arts college graduate do at a nonprofit? What is it really like to work for a nonprofit? Answers to these questions and more can be found by attending the “Career Tour with Nonprofit Organizations” sponsored by the Career Engagement Center and the Civic Engagement Office.
The Career Tour offers Cornell students interested in exploring careers in the nonprofit world with a chance to get the inside scoop! During the Career Tour, students will visit three unique nonprofit organizations in Cedar Rapids to learn about who they are, what they do, how they make an impact in the community, and what kinds of work skills are needed to be successful.

Progress on Afghan Women's Rights

Esther Hyneman of Women for Afghan Women, a grassroots women's human rights program in Afghanistan, will speak about problems, obstacles, and victories of the women they work with. She will discuss progress made on women's rights, what this organization sees as the future of this country, and the real story on not only what the Afghan people want but ask for. Sponsored by the Chaplain and Spiritual Life Office and its Inter-Spiritual Understanding Student Leaders.
Civic Engagement Minor

Are you interested in earning a formal credential demonstrating your commitment to public service? If so, consider the Civic Engagement Minor. Approved for the first time this year, the Civic Engagement Minor is a six-course minor with an applied service requirement. Summer Human Rights Programs
Application Deadline January 30
Global Youth Connect is hosting several Human Rights Programs in Summer 2012 in Rwanda, Bosnia, and New York City. The programs are an opportunity to learn about and act upon human rights at both the local and global level. Volunteer Opportunities with Care Initiatives Hospice
Required Orientation: Monday, January 16, 5:00-8:30, Cedar Rapids
Care Initiatives Hospice offers care and palliative support for Iowans in the final stages of life, with locations in the Cedar Rapids area. Volunteers can serve in a variety of roles for the hospice, including running errands, assisting with activities in a facility, helping with household chores, or providing help in the office. All volunteers must go through an orientation prior to serving. The next orientation will take place on Monday, January 16 from 5:00-8:30 in Cedar Rapids.
