NEWS HIGHLIGHTS & UPDATES

Lake Mohawksin Management Plan

Leveraging funding from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), FolM has developed and is implementing a forward-looking, comprehensive lake management plan.

We collected:
• Baseline data on the Lake Mohawksin ecosystem.
• Detailed information on invasive species in the lake (primarily
Eurasian Water Milfoil and Curly Leaf Pondweed as well as Purple Loosestrife).
• Stakeholders views on their use of the lake, opinions on the past and present condition of the Mohawksin and how it should be managed.

Based on all the inputs, a 10 year implementation plan was proposed and accepted by WDNR. We are currently taking action on key elements of this plan.

For more information, see "Final Comprehensive Lake Management Plan" on our Plans & Records page.

Environmental Mapping

FoLM has been allocated a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) grant, which will focus on creating publicly available maps to illustrate the shoreline conditions and other lakeshore data for Lake Mohawksin. The maps developed will be used to educate key stakeholders. This is important since the shoreline of a lake impacts the quality of the lake.

For more information, see "2022 Lake Surface Water Education Grant" on our Plans & Records page.

Wisconsin Lakes Protection Grant Program

Lake Mohawksin landowners are encouraged to seek FOLM’s assistance/endorsement in applying for grants from the WDNR Healthy Lakes and Rivers to improve our lakes’ habitat, natural beauty, or slow, divert, clean and filter runoff.

FOLM assisted Mike and Connie DeBels in gaining grant approval to install the Native Plantings on their Lake Mohawksin shoreline. The project will include planting 1 tree, 2 shrubs, 84 native grasses plants and 84 native wildflower plants. The 30’ x 38’ x 23’ plot is designed to attract birds and butterflies as well as restore and beautify the shoreline and will be completed between March 15 and December 31, 2023.

We welcome boaters to stop by to take a look or ask questions! Follow the project process on Facebook.

Clean Boats Clean Waters Initiative

FoLM and the Lake Nokomis Lake District (LNLD) have partnered with the Lincoln County Land Services Department to expand Clean Boats Clean Waters (CBCW) efforts at their launches. CBCW helps prevent the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS).

FoLM and LNLD both gave financial contributions to the Lincoln County AIS program. These contributions were used as matching funds on a CBCW grant application with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This grant was recently awarded and will allow Lincoln County to hire CBCW inspectors that will be stationed on Lake Mohawksin and Lake Nokomis landings throughout the coming summer months.

These inspectors help remind people of the ways they can prevent the spread of AIS and provide educational information on AIS and the state regulations that prevent their spread.

Controlling Purple Loosestrife

Using beetles to control the invasive purple loosestrife plant is currently considered the safest and most effective way of long-term control of dense and extensive purple loosestrife stands.

FoLM Secretary Connie DeBels coordinated with Rosie Page, Coordinator of the Wisconsin Headwaters Invasive Species Partnership (WHIP) with their purple loosestrife beetle rearing program in the summer of 2022. Potted purple loosestrife plants were brought by Rosie to the DeBels’ Lake Mohawksin property to grow to the desire height. The beetle larvae were then introduced to the plants. The beetles were harvested in July and transported and released at strategic purple loosestrife locations on the lake with permission of those landowners.

Derek Thorn, Coordinator of Forest, Langlade, Oconto Waterways Aquatic Invasive Species Program (FLOW AIS) assisted with the project in the setup of the plants and beetles and then release of beetles.

Connie plans to assist with this very important program again in 2023.
