Hawai'i Art News From

Aloha Friends,

Ever feel like they're talking behind your back? It's ok...I hope.
This is a family of 'alalā painted on a mural in Hilo. Speaking of Hilo, i'll be painting a mural at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center throughout the month of June, so stop in and say hello.

The Art Tip this time is on Wet Blending With Acrylics. This is way harder than doing it with oils, so I'll tell you how I do it.

Big Island Friends, the Honeybee Painting Class and Hive Tour is on May 13 or 14 in 'Āhualoa. Read about it below and sign up bee-fore it sells out.

Our famous Painting in Paradise Artist Retreat and Party will be held in July 7-9, back at our original paradise beach house in Waimānalo. This is a heads-up for those interested in planning a trip to Hawaii to participate in it.

A new wide format painting named "Sherwood Forest" is now available as a metal print and as a canvas giclèe. Though it was painted many years ago, it has quickly become a popular image.

Painting Maui Murals is the featured episode on the Painting in Paradise tv show on Spectrum OC16tv and on my Patrick Ching Youtube channel. Our next episode will be on the history of our Artist Painting Retreats and Epic Castaway Parties.

Enjoy all this, and our Favorite Photos, in this
Month of May Newsletter.

With Thanks and Aloha from me,

ART TIP -
Wet Blending With Acrylics

Wet blending a gradual fade from one color to another with acrylic paint is no easy task, but If you can pull it off well, you'll be on your way to making a beautiful painting. Folks love to see a well done gradual fade. It makes them Feel Good. An abrupt fade is much easier to create and usually not as enjoyable to look at.

Acrylic paints dry fast, therefore, you gotta work fast. I mix my colors in little paper cups. Get your colors just right and make sure you mix More than you need. Frugal people have a hard time with this cause they don't want to waste any paint. If you run out of paint while trying to blend wet acrylics, the look of your art will suffer.

Folks try spraying water on their paints or using additives that prolong the drying time of acrylics. In my experience these techniques do not produce as beautiful results as when using rich, thick paint.

My favorite acrylic paint used to be Liquitex but now I use Golden brand paints because they keep their nice texture longer in Hawaii's climate. Golden also has a line of "Open" acrylics that stay wet longer than normal acrylics.

If I have a large area to paint an acrylic fade, I try to do it at night when the weather is cooler or even wait for a thunderstorm day. I put it on thick starting with my lightest colors and then working to darker colors. Oh,…and once you start, Don’t Stop!

You can see a quick video of my acrylic fading process. Just Click on my Youtube channel here:

New Paintoramic Image
“Sherwood Forest”

Waimānalo Bay on O‘ahu’s east shore is the setting for this panoramic painting I call a “Paintoramic”. Mānana (Rabbit Island) floats beyond the emerald waters and ironwood trees in the area nicknamed “Sherwood forest”.

This is a wonderful image for the narrow spaces above doorways, but due to its unique proportions, this painting is not available in matted prints. It is available in canvas giclée and is the first painting I have made available on aluminum (metal).

Sizes 5.5" x 35", 7.75" x 48", 10" x 62" and larger upon request.
