Georgia Mural Trail

Villa Rica now has its very own mural on the side of Hixtown Brewing Co. as part of the Georgia Arts Mural Trail!

The Georgia Arts Mural Trail is now in over three states, and we are lucky to have one of these amazing murals in downtown Villa Rica! This 1000-square-foot masterpiece reflects aspects of Villa Rica's history and culture. It's one of a series of murals in cities across the state as part of this project.

The trail's mission is to promote community heritage, culture, and tourism through public murals and events across small communities and cities in Georgia. Thanks to the Go Georgia Arts program, Villa Rica received a mural painted on the side of Hixtown Brewing Co., located at 407 Main St.

The mural not only tells the story of Villa Rica but also is a lasting reminder of the artist’s dedication, even in the face of the ultimate obstacle. At the March 16th ribbon cutting, Villa Rica Mayor Gil McDougal said
“This mural not only represents a great benefit for our downtown, it also represents the last work of an artist who brought beauty to the downtowns of many cities”. Sadly, the artist John W. Christian passed away on December 27th, just two days shy of finishing the mural. Christian has painted 60 murals across the state, including murals in Blue Ridge, Hapeville, Forest Park, and Clarksville.

“It was an exciting project for us to be a part of, but filled with some sadness as we lost the very talented artist, John Christian, in the process,” Janet Chumley, Tourism Director for Villa Rica, acknowledges. She adds, however, “His family and friends, along with his son Michael and brother Ed were able to complete [it], and for that, we [as a city] are very thankful.”

Christian’s legacy as a Georgia muralist contributes to the beauty enjoyed by citizens. His work can be seen throughout Georgia, highlighting historical accomplishments and culture, and Villa Rica is lucky to have a piece of his legacy right here in our downtown.

I encourage you to check it out and take a stroll downtown Villa Rica to view this beautiful work of art! And if you want to read more about how the mural trail began and where to find the other murals, click here; https://www.georgiamuraltrail.com/

West Ga Jazz Festival

You won't want to miss the West Ga Jazz Festival in Villa Rica! This fantastic event will take place at The MILL Amphitheater and is free to the public.

Villa Rica welcomed the first West Georgia Jazz Festival in 2016, showcasing the diversity of jazz styles in the City of Gold.

Now, on April 29th, the Festival is coming back for its sixth year, swinging into town with four groups that represent America's only true art form. With a blend of R&B, Hip Hop, and Dixieland, the 2023 Festival is set to be an extraordinary show, complete with the rich sounds of brass and strings that jazz is famous for. Violinist Ken Ford will be the featured artist, with appearances from other guest artists.

Funny Arrest Story

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office recently released a video of a woman performing "ballet and Irish folk dance moves" during a roadside sobriety test. The woman, Amy Harrington, was pulled over after rear-ending another car. Deputies said she showed signs of being impaired, including bloodshot, watery, and glassy eyes, and difficulty following instructions.

During the sobriety test, the deputy asked Harrington to walk the line. “Yeah, well, you sound like my ballet coach,” Harrington answered before taking five steps on the line and then transitioning into a ballet sequence.

“That wasn’t the exercise that I was demonstrating,” the deputy said.

Without responding, Harrington then leaped into a ballet/Irish folk hybrid dance!

This isn't the first time Harrington has refused testing, either. In March 2019, she refused to test after a separate incident in Pinellas County. Deputies also found a cup of liquid that smelled like alcohol in her car.

If you plan to drink, make sure to have a designated driver, use a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft, or call a taxi. Don't risk the safety of yourself and others on the road by driving under the influence. And if asked to walk the line for a sobriety test, maybe save your dance moves for later!
