We have a new way to live, learn and laugh as a neighborhood!

This digital publication has been established to build community and connect our neighbors along with supporting our greater community in the Madison area. We recognized that without a community gathering space or town square we needed to look to multiple means to connect each other as neighbors and collectively work to build our community. The Birchwood-Oaks Neighborhood Association was established to do just that!

Please feel free to forward this publication and encourage neighbors to sign up to become a member of this association using this form.

Note from the President:

Dear Neighbors:

I don’t want to jinx it, but it looks like warmer weather may finally be approaching! We are looking forward to seeing more and more neighbors out and about and meeting more people. Please continue to share our info with new neighbors and new-to-you neighbors.

What’s coming up in our neighborhood?

SAVE THE DATE! Our Spring Party in the Park is scheduled for

Sunday, May 21st!

Our Spring Party in the Park is right around the corner! We will feature our legendary Bags tournament ($10/team entry) as well as other games like giant Jenga, ladder golf, KanJam and more. We’ll also have the usual fun for the kids including bubbles, chalk, temporary tattoos and a few games!

Birchwood-Oaks Rocks!

To help spread excitement and a sense of community through creativity, Birchwood-Oaks is so excited to continue our Spring through Fall activity: "Birchwood-Oaks Rocks!" This will be an ongoing event throughout the year where various painted rocks are hidden in the neighborhood to bring joy to the finder.

Put your creative caps on and paint/marker river rocks with your favorite animals, phrases, colors and designs. Use these cold and snowy winter days stuck inside and paint as many rocks as you want. All ages and decorating skills are encouraged to participate. But: don’t hide any rocks yet! Hold onto your festive creations, and we’ll be announcing more information next month on how you can hide your rocks and share in the fun of the hunt!

Need help getting started? Here are a few imaginative ideas from others, but the sky's the limit!

Earth Day 2023: Invest in Our Planet

10 Earth Day Fun Facts:

  1. Senator Gaylord Nelson conceived Earth Day in the early 1960s.

  2. The first Earth Day was in 1970. Nelson's demonstration was set for April 22, 1970. It purposefully fell between spring break and final exams in the hope that college students would participate.

  3. The US government responded to Earth Day with environmental legislation. It helped inspire the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts.

  4. Earth Day went global in 1990.

  5. About one billion people recognize Earth Day each year.

  6. Earth Day always falls on April 22.

  7. It’s known as “International Mother Earth Day” around the world.

  8. Worldwide initiatives have benefited the environment.

  9. There’s an “official” Earth Day song. One of the most popular Earth Day songs is Earth Anthem, which was written in 2013 by Indian poet Abhay Kumar. It has been translated in dozens of languages, including all official United Nations languages.

  10. This year marks the 53nd anniversary and the theme is “Invest in Our Planet.” Acting as a continuation of last year’s well-received campaign, the theme is focused on engaging governments, institutions, businesses, and the more than 1 billion citizens who participate annually in Earth Day to do their part – everyone accounted for, everyone accountable.

Take Action:

Let’s help our neighborhood look great and keep our environment clean! The Birchwood-Oaks NA would like to suggest an unofficial cleanup weekend Friday April 21st - Sunday the 23rd! Grab your family, a friend, or head out solo, and pick up garbage you see in the neighborhood and surrounding areas. Don’t forget our ponds and wooded areas as they get especially littered due to construction and wind debris! Whether you pick up one piece or one hundred pieces, every little bit helps keep our community looking great!

PET PROFILE

Meet Olaf

Olaf is a 1-year old Yorkshire Terrier. Olaf came to live with his “mom,” Jill, in February of 2022.

Olaf’s Likes: River and Echo (his doggie neighbors down the street), people food, freeze dried treats, playing, all dogs, walks (when it’s warm), attention, and snuggles

Olaf’s Dislikes: Listening to the rules, loud noises, fireworks, thunder, baths

Other things from Jill and Olaf:

I worked with the AKC to find a breeder and drove to southern Illinois to get Olaf who is one of only two in his litter. He was the "laid back" one. He was bred to be shown and is a direct descendant of the only Yorkie to ever win Westminster. The breeder flew his dad in from Russia to perfect his ears. While his ears are perfect, his bite is not and that is how he ended up with me.

Olaf loves dogs...all dogs, but his absolute favorite is River Martinson. If those two could get married, they would. When the two of them are together, you can see little heart emojis flying above their heads. He puts the brakes on whenever we walk past River's house and tries to refuse going any further. If you see us in the neighborhood or even at our house, he will bark at other dogs and can sound vicious. He's saying, "Come play with me!!!!!,” with a great amount of zeal.

Playdates with River and Echo are Olaf's most favorite thing. He also enjoys going to dog parks, playing with any dog that will play with him, walks with other dogs (did I mention River?), playing hide and seek, playing with toys...anything with playing! We live on Sunshine Lane and have a lot of doggie friends and Olaf's inner circle consists of Maddie, Finley, Bella, Bailey, Nellie, Aza, Zaaz, Hope and of course, Echo and RIVER!

We look forward to the proposed dog park coming in the next few years. Until then, when on Sunshine Lane, you'll often find several of us gathered together visiting and allowing our dogs to socialize. We welcome you to stop and join us!

If you’d like your pet/s to be featured, please fill out this form (https://forms.gle/Zojhpm2WC1c1iwcz8) and send photos to BirchwoodOaksNA@gmail.com.
