From the Head of School
Dear Gardner community,
As Spring weather brings more sunshine, the energy on campus is bright. On Friday, the campus was humming with happy and engaged children. Our Klickitat class beeped and booped (loudly!) in the field on their recorders, while our Pahto students had art class on the picnic tables in the sunshine. Kalama students were excited to go to the Farmhouse to view the Art Gallery, and our Mazama students gave me a big hug on their way to the garden. Some Loowiters have been practicing cartwheels and flips while others are dedicated soccer players. Tumtummers dug in the sand and played Red Light Green Light. The day ended with our Wy'East class returning from their memorable overnight experience at OMSI's Camp Gray. It's the time of year that campus hums with its own vibration, and it's pretty incredible to observe and experience the friendships, learning, and creativity happening every day.
I'm looking forward to the opportunity to see many of you at our upcoming 2023 Auction this Saturday on the Gardner School campus. Our admin team and teachers have been busy, working with volunteers to bring the vision together with the goal of offering our families and community supporters a way to connect with one another, have fun, and raise vital funds to support students and teachers at our school. For all of us, this evening will serve as an opportunity to celebrate our community while keeping the focus on what matters most- providing a space to cultivate authentic learning through integrated experiences in a supportive community.
In gratitude,

Gardner Student Auction Art Gallery
|
|
|
Thanks for coming out to our Art Gallery opening on Wednesday! We had a great turnout, and loved showcasing the student work throughout the week. Our students from preschool to 6th grade take such pride in these pieces, and the attention to detail and thoughtful, authentic approaches make them even more special. These beautiful pieces will be on display and up for auction this Saturday at our event.

Are you able to stop by between 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Friday to support auction set up plans? We could use help getting things in place for Saturday's event. Any amount of time is appreciated, and after care is provided without charge for anyone helping. Reach out to Courtney Tomlinson with any questions.

Experiential Learning
Wy'East Outdoor School
What an adventure! Our Wy'East students had a wonderful outdoor experience at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) 's Camp Gray in Newport, Oregon. They learned about microplastics while on a beach hike, designed solutions to address the issue, studied skulls and pelts to identify animal adaptations, and still had time for plenty of play. They even got to participate in a squid dissection, using the ink sack and internal shell to write with the ink! These experiential education opportunities create lasting memories for our students, and are a unique benefit of a Gardner School education.

Program Spotlight
Native Plants Garden
|
|
|
Families may remember that Gardner was awarded a $1000 grant from the Washington Native Plant Society last year with the goal of adding native plants to our landscaping and supporting our local ecosystem. The planning started last year, and plants were purchased and the site was prepped this spring under the direction of Brianna Kroeker. This native plant teaching garden will provide a space for students to learn about biodiversity, native plant restoration, and traditional plants of the Pacific Northwest. While the plants are small now, we know the end result will be a wonderful learning garden and a starting spot for more environmental projects around campus.
Thank you to Tumtum parent, Colton Ives, for his design plan and expertise as the proprietor of Urban Fern Gardening and Klickitat parent, Jane Kleiner of nature + play designs for sharing her insights and implementation ideas. Thank you to all the volunteers who continue to make our campus an educational, and beautiful, place!
