Dear Parents,

While most kids love their Harry Potter books, it's also important to balance their reading selections with nonfiction. After all, most of the reading they'll be doing at school are from this genre. Here are 5 suggestions.

1) Magazines - Periodicals give kids fresh and interesting stories to read every month. We love Sports Illustrated and National Geographic Kids.

2) Game Handbooks and Toy Encyclopedias - We've seen many kids catch the reading bug from consuming reference books about Minecraft and Lego.

3) Documentaries - Your local libraries and Netflix have hundreds of kid-friendly documentaries such as First Position (dancing), March of the Penguins (environment), and Spellbound (spelling bees).

4) Podcasts - Long car rides are perfect for listening to NPR's science-based Wow in the World or, for budding entrepreneurs, How I Built This.

5) Biographies - Have your kids read about their heroes. Inspirational favorites include I am Malala and the Ordinary People Change the World series by Brad Meltzer

May your kids discover the wonderful world of nonfiction. It will certainly help them become better writers.

Happy reading,
