Black Arm Bands - Day of Mourning
For 7 years, the Province of BC has recognized the toxic drug crisis as a provincial health emergency. In fact the number of deaths we see in our communities is staggering: This past January, 211 people lost their lives from suspected illicit drug toxicity, equating to a rate of nearly 47% deaths per 100,000 people. 77% were male, 69% were aged 30-59.
These numbers are a devastating wake-up call. At Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc we stand with members of our community beside the Kamloops Regional Community Action Team and Addiction Matters Kamloops to recognize this day, Friday, April 14th as the Day of Mourning. We wear an armband in remembrance of those lost, and to make a statement that more needs to be done to save lives.
