Spring 2023
Welcome 2023 Board!
Hello RMS Members,

It was great to see so many of you at the holiday party back in January, although it is hard to believe that was months ago – this winter has flown by! This winter the AIHA RMS Board also welcomed our new board members:

Jenni Azuogu-Lewis: Legislative, Kassey Braun: Webmaster (previously served as President-Elect, President, Past-President), Brandy Howard: Membership (previously served as Webmaster), Tim Lockhart: Education/Programs (previously served as President-Elect, President, Past-President), Katie McDermott: Secretary (also previously served as Secretary), Brian O’Malley: Treasurer (previously served as Legislative), Jared Schenfeldt: Student Chair, Phillip Stepherson: Student Chair, Abigail Tompkins: President-Elect

We are grateful to have these new colleagues on our team, and also appreciate the RMS board members continuing service in 2023: Don Archibald, Joe Damiano, Eric Esswein, Sarah Kaiman, Kayla Lesperance, Tony Schwegmann, and Bailey Shaw.

Bringing on new board members is always reinvigorating - we will continue providing you with our traditional RMS events and educational opportunities (Fall Technical Conference, lunch and learns, PDCs, etc.), as well as initiating some new efforts. Some of our key initiatives this year are:
•             Increasing awareness about learning and development opportunities with some of our peer organizations such as ASSP
•             Highlighting IH concerns in Colorado industries
•             Examining issues raised in the four AIHA Grand Challenges initiatives
•             Encouraging member participation in RMS board meetings and planning activities by pairing these events with outings like hiking, biking, and social events

Our local section wouldn’t be the same without you, and so many of our activities are only possible because you volunteer your time! If you are interested in being more active in the local section please reach out.

Hope to see you soon,
Alison McGrath
AIHA- RMS President

April Lunch & Learn- A Smart Lab’s Choose Your Own Adventure: Laboratory Ventilation Risk Assessment

When: April 26th, 11:30 – 1:00 pm
Where: Hellman and Associates, 11913 West I-70 Frontage Rd North, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033
What: Ventilation is a defense mechanism to mitigate airborne hazards produced during research activities in laboratories. Yet as a vital component to maintaining healthy, safe, indoor air quality, laboratory ventilation systems can fall victim to ineffective operation, posing a risk to researchers. This presentation outlines how EHS professionals can employ a Smart Labs program. This includes completing a laboratory ventilation risk assessment—a systematic process for identifying risk from airborne hazards and informing dynamic demand-based ventilation to enhance laboratory safety and energy efficiency. Structured as a choose-your-own-adventure presentation, RMS members will be walked through how to conduct a laboratory ventilation risk assessment, such as learning how to perform a series of laboratory surveys and how to assign each laboratory characteristic with a risk control band.

Member Spotlight
This quarter we are profiling member and student liaison chair of the RMS board, Jared Schenfeldt. Jared is a student administrative assistant/ student in the masters program for Occupational Health at the Colorado School of Public Health at the University of Colorado Anschutz campus.
.

Where are you going to school and what are you studying?
I am earning a MPH in Environmental and Occupational Health at the Colorado School of Public Health.

What made you interested in Industrial Hygiene/ joining AIHA?
I am personally interested in Industrial Hygiene as promoting the best possible occupational health is a passion of mine. Specifically, I am fascinated by ergonomics and how our body adapts to conditions it is worked in, and with chemicals and their many effects on the human body. I love chemistry, biology, exercise science and public health which makes Industrial Hygiene a perfect fit for me.

What do you do with your time outside of school?
I love to cook, strength train, hike, play with my kitties, ski, and dance the night away at music festivals. I am an outgoing thrill seeker who loves to challenge myself and do most things that involve exploration and physical challenges.

Where do you see yourself going when you graduate/ what are your career goals?
I see myself working within occupational health improving the lives of our workers. I could see myself as an industrial hygienist, health safety manager, or a safety consultant promoting health through toxicology, ergonomics, wellbeing interventions, and much more. One day, I would love to manage policies that ensured good worker health in all aspects for a large company or for multiple smaller to mid-sized companies as a consultant expert.

What are you hoping to bring to the table as one of the student liaisons for our chapter this year?
I am hoping to bridge the students at the Colorado School of Public Health and our Rocky Mountain Section. I would like to see more student involvement in our events and will promote this organization to my school to make our students aware of the many opportunities that the AIHA can bring to these individuals.

Thanks Jared!
