Following the announcement of our Adaptable 2022/23 shortlist our team have been busy meeting with many writers from all phases of the program.
Whether we're training our shortlisted writers ready for their pitches to producers at Gold Coast Film Festival, or chatting with program applicants to provide reader feedback in Feedback Sessions, it all comes down to that most joyous of things: coming together to discuss the craft of writing - and all the future possibilties that lie ahead.

Middle Ground - Young Writers Group
A new, monthly creative writing group and freeform workshop for young writers aged 16-20. An opportunity to connect with likeminded writers and work on your stories, with access to advice.

As part of the Investing in Queensland Women fund, we are running a special month of Right Left Write dedicated to Queensland women and girls. Our prompt for April is My Story, My Voice.
Submit your stories of Queensland women to be considered for publication in an anthology later this year. Entries are welcomed from all writers; stories can be fiction or non-fiction, any genre, or personal anecdotes - and up to 750 words in length.
Submissions close 30 April - submit your entry now.

Publishable - manuscript development program

Queensland Writers Centre’s national Publishable program for emerging writers is back for 2023 and calling for submissions of unpublished manuscripts across a broad range of genres and formats.
Opportunities for feedback and development are available for all applicants, including a complimentary workshop tailored to the year’s cohort of applications – all helping you progress your manuscript closer to publication.

Under the Silver Tree Short Story Competition
Closes: 12 April
Creative writing competition offering $1,000 cash for first prize. Submit up to 2,000 words on the theme of Underground. Entries judged by Claire Corbett.
Australia Council - Music Writers’ Travel Bursary
Closes: 17 April for travel in 2023
Travel bursaries of $3,000 offered for writers to attend international events and write about Australian artists and musicians performing.
Varuna, The National Writer's House - Ann Moyal Non-Fiction Fellowship
Closes: 4 May
Three Fellowships avaiable, supporting writers developing an original work of nonfiction in the fields of the humanities and social sciences. Fellowships will run from 27 November to 18 December 2023 (residency dates non-negotiable).
Island Nonfiction Prize
Closes: 7 May
Submissions of nonfiction works suitable to a general audience accepted, up to 4,000 words. Winner receives $3,000 cash prize and publication in Island magazine (July 2023). All other entries considered for publication.

SLQ Young Writers Award
Closes: 15 May
Entries open for State Library of Queensland's annual short story competition for writers aged 18–25. Submit a short story (up to 2,500 words) for a chance at a $2,000 prize and publication in Griffith Review.
Queensland Writers Centre - Fishbowl Residency
Applications: rolling
The Fishbowl Residency provides writing space, mentorship and assistance for writers to complete a draft of their work. Over a ten-week residency, writers work from our offices and share their progress with our members. Now seeking applications for residencies beginning mid-year.
AAWP/Westerly Life Writing Prize
Closes: 28 June
Welcomes submissions of autobiography, biography, memoir, and essays from emerging and established writers. Winner receives a $500 cash prize, subscription to Westerly, and fees to attend the AAWP conference.
