  • From Soil to Stars: Finding Nature in the Archival
    • Join MTU's Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion and MTU's Office of Sustainability and Resilience for a film showing and discussion
    • This collection of lyrical essays explores stories spanning hundreds of years and thousands of miles, traveling from roots to space-finding rich Blackness everywhere. Presented by Augsburg University as part of Earth Month 2023 at Michigan Tech.
    • There will be snacks!
    • The event is being held on Monday, April 3 from 5:30-7:00pm in G002 Hesterberg Hall, U.J. Noblet Forestry Building
  • Beer: A cultural and social tour Spring Break Trip
    • There will be an informational meeting about the trip on April 4, 5 - 6 pm in the AOB commons
    • The trip will take place on Spring Break 2024, Feb 22 - March 3. 
    • Applications will begin in Sept 2023

        • Title: Founding Director  of AgriSolar Consulting, LLC
        • AgriSolar’s mission is advancing sustainable land use, farm viability, and renewable energy through agrivoltaic solutions. We leverage our experience in solar, energy policy, community-engagement, horticulture, landscape architecture, and 3D modeling to progress agrivoltaic research & development.
      • Timothy Stone (MTU BS 2020, MS 2021)  
        • Title: GIS Analyst DataStory Consutants
        • Tim Stone graduated in May 2020 with a B.S. in Sustainability Sciences & Society and then again in December 2021 with a M.S. in Industrial Heritage & Archaeology. He recently started a position with Datastory Consulting - a location analytics company that consults for companies across 7 economic sectors.This position require hem to use many of the skills learned doing research to help make sustainable suggestions for new store locations and other corporate-level decisions.
      • Rachael J. Letter, (MTU MS 2005), RPA (she/her)
        • Title: Senior Archaeologist, Padre Associates
        • Rachael Letter earned her master’s degree in Industrial Archaeology from Michigan Technological University in 2005 after graduating with a degree in Archaeology and Art History from the University of Evansville in 2003. After school, Rachael worked as an archaeological technician on projects in New Jersey, North Carolina, Kansas, Ohio, Louisiana, and spent two years as archaeologist for the Indiana Department of Transportation. She moved to California in 2009 and completed projects on the Central Coast, in the Great Basin, the San Joaquin Valley, and northern California. Rachael is currently Senior Archaeologist and Project Manager with Padre Associates, Inc. and works from their San Luis Obispo office.
Congratulations! 
  • Congratulations to Caitlyn Sutherlin on her recent receipt of two research awards last week--the Great Lakes Research Center for "Identifying Community Connections to Nature in California, El Salvador with Photovoice" and also the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc.'s Pathfinder Graduate Student Fellowship--to fund her field research studying climate change and community adaptations in El Salvador this summer.
  • Congratulations to Allyson Fenton, Stanley Elder, and Mady VanWeiren, who each completed the requirements for the Peace Corps Prep certificate.  These students have been certified as ready to serve in the United States Peace Corps and now receive a certificate from the Peace Corps for their training in intercultural sensitivity, a Peace Corps work sector (e.g., environment, health, education, etc.), and professional and leadership development.  Other students who are interested in pursuing the certificate should contact Dr. Henquinet at kbhenqui@mtu.edu for more information. 
Social Scientists in Action
  • Good work to Dr. Angie Carter for her submission of the grant proposal "Meeting needs at the margins: Building networks to support "missed" land stewards," with co-PI Dr. Andrea Basche (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), to USDA's NC SARE's Research & Education program last week.
    • Dr. Angie Carter and students Isabelle Cervantes and Abby Pettit attended the UP Food Summit in Marquette, MI last week and shared the "Sharing Abundance and Adversity: Food Stories from the Keweenaw" community photovoice exhibit.
    • The exhibit consists of 11 posters sharing food stories from a group of community members who began meeting in fall 2022.
    • Students in Dr. Carter's Communities & Research class facilitated the project last fall and undergraduate research assistant Isabelle Cervantes designed the exhibit this spring for printing and sharing in the community.
  • Pictured are (L to R) Dr. Angie Carter, Abby Pettit, Emily Stanton, Isabelle Cervantes, and Kate Atkinson. Emily and Kate were two of the community members who took part in the project.
    • A virtual book displaying the project, designed by Abby Pettit, can be viewed here.
    • The exhibit will be displayed throughout the area in the coming year as an educational tool about the importance and diversity of local foods in our area.

Other Announcements
The Social Sciences Student Game Night was held last Friday, March 31st. Caroline Rorhus, Abby Pettit, Isabelle Cervantes, Janelle Freeman, Skylar Scheff, and Grace Murray attended. It was lots of fun eating pizza and playing UNO Flip. Make sure to keep your eyes open for any future student ambassador events.

    • Available exclusively for Pavlis Honors College students through a generous gift from an alumnus of Michigan Tech with a passion for education and innovation.
    • The $1,000 scholarship is available to students expressing research and innovation interests in any of these three areas:
      • Water quality management,
      • Renewable energy, or
      • Solutions to prevent and cure cancer.

    • In this report, we also hope to incorporate a trendspotter section to highlight Ann Arbor Public Schools which have committed to achieving 100% renewable energy in their district. 
    • This is a summer work opportunity supervised by Chelsea Schelly in partnership with Groundwork.
