Updates and Developments at Wadambuk

We've had a busy start to the year here at the community centre, and we're excited to share some updates with you.

As you may know, besides our regular classes and activities, we also invest a lot of time and effort in seeking grants to improve our facilities. We're thrilled to announce that we were successful in our application for funds through the federal government's Stronger Communities Grant last year. With these funds, we were able to make some much-needed improvements to our centre.

Thanks to the help and expertise of the Men's Shed at St Andrews, we now have a magnificent shade sail over the deck in our rear yard. This shade sail provides a comfortable and shaded space for our community members to relax and enjoy outdoor activities. Additionally, we've installed a waterproof shade structure in the lower section of the yard, which can be used by the community during activities or events, even if it happens to rain.

In addition to the shade upgrades, we also used the grant funds to install a reflective film on the window in our main community room, which we affectionately call the "eye" window. This film has greatly reduced glare, making it easier for our members to view presentations on the big screen without any interference.

We're grateful for the support of the federal government's Stronger Communities Grant and the Men's Shed at St Andrews in making these improvements possible. We'll continue to explore and pursue grant opportunities to enhance our community centre and provide the best experience for our members.

Stay tuned for more updates in future newsletters, and remember to take a moment to enjoy the new and improved facilities at our community centre!

Wadambuk also now has a public access AED (automated external defibrilator) thanks to a grant from the Hurstbridge branch of the Bendigo Bank. The bank partially funded the purchase of the AED and donated the outdoor storage cabinet worth $500. The location of the unit is registerd with Ambulance Victoria and is now ready for use in an emergency.

Energy Resilience Solutions Program

Wadambuk has been selected as one of 24 towns across Victoria, for installation of a free energy back-up system through the Vic Government’s Energy Resilience Solutions Program, Microgrids.
The purposes of the program are to provide increased energy resilience by funding the installation of rooftop solar PV, battery systems and/or diesel generators to buildings. The site is to act as a community hub providing access to back up power and other facilities such as toilets, showers and hot water, in case of a prolonged power outage. AusNet Asset Services Pty Ltd has been appointed as the program delivery lead. We are very excited about this project and can't wait to update the community on the progress once the project is underway!

What's with the asphalt?

An article by Pat Reynolds

When the new path from the Market to the Community Centre was put in some years ago, the general feeling in the community was that we wanted it to be surfaced with Donnybrook toppings and not asphalt.
Sadly, it didn’t take long before the surface broke down, making the path unsuitable for families with pushers and little kids on bikes.
For toppings to be successful, the surface needs very regular maintenance, and this is an unrealistic expectation.
So, the decision has been made to prepare the damage and the stretch of path over the bridge with asphalt. The young families I have spoken to are happy with this decision and say it will be much more user friendly.
It has been done in an informal way, and after it gets a coating of dust and leaf litter, it will blend into our St Andrews environment.
