More bad news about life expectancy in the U.S.
For the past decade, it’s been known that Americans are not living as long as they used to, on average. For the first time in decades, lifespans have actually been getting shorter. This isn’t a problem of old people dying, though - this is largely happening because younger people are dying earlier, in their teens and 20s. The leading causes: drugs, guns, and cars.
There’s been some great analysis on this of late, including this data-rich FT piece by John Burn-Murdoch and this story by David Wallace-Wells. And next Monday the Washington Post holds a free public meeting on the topic - we’ll be listening.
Get a dose of nature
It’s been a long time since we did any serious app-based self-tracking, but over the past month Thomas has been enjoying the NatureDose app. It’s very simple: it tracks how much time you spend in nature. That’s not just being outside, but being in a natural environment. You can set a weekly goal, too. That’s it. It definitely helps nudge me to, say, go for a run outside instead of a trip to the gym (or taking a nap). Fun! Download here
