This newsletter presents an update on the HEICCAM network activities and announcements, upcoming events, and new developments around clean air research.

If you have any new scientific developments, announcements, or recently published papers that you would like to share with the HEICCAM community, please send them to heiccam@ed.ac.uk or tag us on Twitter: @heiccam_uk

Network Updates & Announcements

No-Cost Extension:

We are pleased to announce to the network that HEICCAM has been awarded a 12-month no-cost extension by UKRI. This means that the work we have been doing together and our collaborations can continue and the HEICCAM network will now be ongoing until summer 2024.

POST approved work:

The government’s Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology (POST) has approved work on indoor air quality to produce a document for informing MPs about science to inform future policy. POST is looking for scientists with expertise in indoor air quality to contribute to understanding in this topic. Contributors might be interviewed by the authors or offered the opportunity to serve as reviewers for the overall document upon completion. You can find information on how to contribute here

CAN (Clean Air Networks) Conference:

Registration for the CAN conference is now open! The conference (5-6th July 2023) will showcase all the fantastic work from the networks over the past few years and celebrate our achievements together. You can register for the conference here. Many presenters have now been confirmed for the conference and it is great to see lots of HEICCAM representation there. There is more information about the conference here.

Atmospheric Science Letters Special Edition:

Atmospheric Science Letters are running a special issue focusing on `Air Pollution at the Indoor-Outdoor interface for Built Environments.’ They are calling for papers considering (but not limited to) the following topics: modelling of transport processes and dispersion of air pollutants (biological and manmade contaminants) within or across indoor and outdoor environments; the influence of source type and location on individual or population air pollution exposures; the relationship of behaviour /activity to levels of indoor and outdoor pollution exposure; the influence of indoor/outdoor environmental conditions on the development and transport of localized air pollution plumes; and the relationship of indoor and outdoor urban environments to the air pollution exposure of different vulnerable populations.

You can find more information on the call for papers here

Environmental Epidemiologist vacancy at UCL:

The UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health is recruiting for a research fellow in Environmental Epidemiology to work on two novel projects linking national, administrative data to environmental data. The closing date for this vacancy is 13th April. Read more about this opportunity and how to apply here

Recent publications by network members:

Lia Chatzidiakou has co-authored a paper entitled ‘Associations of air pollution mixtures with ambulatory blood pressure: The MobiliSense sensor-based study’ in the journal Environmental Research, a pre-proof of which is available here

Giorgos Petrou, Johnathon Taylor, and Anna Mavrogianni have co-authored a paper entitled ‘Ten questions concerning residential overheating in Central and Northern Europe,’ published in the journal Building and Environment and available here

If you are publishing work that you think the rest of the network may be interested in, please feel free to send us a link once it is available online!

Upcoming Events & Conferences

Inhaled Particles and NanOEH Conference

Bringing together the British Occupational Hygiene Society's 'Inhaled Particles' conference, as well as the Nanotechnology, Occupational and Environmental Health (NanOEH) conference, this event will take place from 15-18th May, 2023 in Manchester. Themes include health risks associated with inhalation of different types of airborne particles, Exposure Modelling and Air Pollution & Human Health. HEICCAM member Mark Miller will be speaking on Wednesday afternoon. Find out more here.

Healthy Buildings Europe

This conference is hosted at RWTH Aachen University under the auspices of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). This year's conference theme is “Beyond disciplinary boundaries – Transdisciplinary perspectives on multisensory stimulation for innovative and creative solutions in a Post-Covid era.” It will take place from 11-14th June, 2023 in Aachen (Germany). More details here.

Clean Air Networks Conference

The Clean Air Networks Conference will bring together HEICCAM and other Clean Air research networks to share insights on cross-cutting themes and develop research strategies for the future. Invites are being circulated to speakers and the programme has been confirmed. The conference will take place at the University of Birmingham's Edgbaston Park Hotel on 5-6th July, 2023. You can find out more here.

Routes to Clean Air Conference

This conference, organised by the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM), is aimed towards air quality practitioners and associated professionals. It will take place from 10-11th October, 2023 in Manchester and currently welcomes abstract submissions on a variety of topics, including Indoor Air Quality and Measurement and Assessment of Air Quality (incl. low-cost technologies). See here for the full call.

Future seminars

We have plans for a series of short form (15 minutes or less) ‘work in progress’ talks for online lunchtime seminars. If you would be interested in sharing your work with the network, getting some interesting feedback and different perspectives, let us know and we will facilitate a seminar. Alternatively, if you have a suggestion of a speaker (for a long or short talk), let us know.

Our sister network TAPAS network has an online seminar running on Thursday 20th April. The online seminar will be led by Colin Gillespie & Graham Applegate from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and will cover 'Community Engagement - Air Quality in Stirlingshire Villages'. More information on upcoming TAPAS seminars is found here.

HEICCAM member Sumil Thakrar will be giving a seminar at 1pm on 19th April for the Edinburgh Global Change seminar series, titled ‘Food systems, land use, air quality, and human health’. This seminar will be in-person in Edinburgh or available to join via zoom.

Early Career Researchers Updates

We have plans for an in-person ECR-focused writing retreat in the beginning of June, looking at locations in the Lake District and Yorkshire. We will be in touch soon with details and updates.

Call for content

We are always eager to support our members. Share with us your news and developments through our e-mail or Twitter handle.
