A Promise For The Future

At the beginning of the week, Jesus and his disciples entered Jerusalem with the crowd shouting, “Hosanna, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.”  Hosanna means, “Save us.” And they called him, “King.” The crowd pulled palm branches from trees and even pulled off their own clothes and laid them in the street. From just about any point of view, it would seem the future was promising for Jesus and His disciples.

Thursday night, Jesus met His disciples in “a large upper room that was furnished, ready and prepared for them.” That night he told them they would deny Him, betray Him and He would be crucified. That night He also told them,  “After I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee” (Mark 14:28).

By Friday morning the crowd that was shouting, “Save us,” was now shouting, “Crucify Him!” And the crowd called out to Pilate for the murderer, Barabbas, to be released. Jesus was mocked and beaten. They placed a crown of thorns on His head, and they nailed him to a cross. With His last breath, from the cross, He prayed for their forgiveness and declared His work was finished.

Jesus was not caught by surprise looking the other way as the future changed in front of Him. His life was not taken from Him, and the future wasn’t plucked from His hand. He gave His life for you and me and His death put us right with God and gave us a fresh start. Before He rose from the grave, He told His disciples then as he tells disciples now, “I will go before you.”

Even as God led His people through the wilderness with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, the risen Christ goes before us today. He goes before us to lead (Rm. 8:14), convict (Rm. 9:1), guard (Phil. 4:7), help (Jn. 14:26), empower (2 Tim. 1:7), and comfort  (Acts 9:31).

Today may be the day that an uncertain future has made you fearful. Know that Jesus has gone before you. He is beside you, above you, beneath you, and behind you. I invite you to lean on Him and trust Him. Today is a great day to renew that relationship with Him and follow.
