Annual CARIM Symposium 2023 - Save the date!

It is with great joy that we announce the date of our annual CARIM symposium.

This year our CARIM symposium will take place on Wednesday 29 November 2023 at the Minderbroedersberg 4-6 - Save the date!

This year's Robert Reneman Lecture will be given by Mary Cushman, hematologist at the University of Vermont Medical Center and a professor of medicine and pathology at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM in Burlington, VT.

More information will follow soon.

Junior Fellowship Philippe Vangrieken

The Belgian Foundation of Frans Janssen, part of the Koning Bouwdewijn Foundation, aims to stimulate diabetes research. Together with the Dutch Diabetes Foundation, they decided to support the Junior Fellowship of Philippe Vangrieken (€ 275,000) awarded in 2022 with the title 'Methylglyoxal as a mediator of insulin resistance: novel mechanism and unique target', with additional funding of € 75,000.

The project of Philippe, a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Internal Medicine, focuses on the role of methylglyoxal in the development of diabetes and its associated microvascular complications. This project aims to unravel how methylglyoxal causes insulin resistance and to evaluate whether lowering systemic methylglyoxal levels prevents the development of insulin resistance and subsequent type 2 diabetes. This extra financial support enables Philippe to include more detailed measures for (micro)vascular function and insulin sensitivity and to investigate the potential role of the microbiome in the association of methylglyoxal with (micro)vascular dysfunction and the development of type 2 diabetes.

Harry Crijns Research Grant

Join the YUFE Training Programme for PhD Supervisors

For the three days online workshop/training for beginning PhD supervisors during fall 2023
By Prof. Ronit Shiri Sverdlov and Dr Jan Theys, Maastricht University

PhD supervision is a core activity in an academic career. The aim of this training is to provide PhD supervisors with tools for recognizing, identifying and supporting young talents. Supervisors will learn how to foster self-development and self-reflection in young talents and will receive a platform for sharing experiences and best practices among peers in different fields and different universities.

The training will include three workshop days. Each workshop day consist of an input part and an InterVision part, in which supervisors will exchange about their experiences with supervision and discuss specific cases among each other. The workshops will be interactive and take part in an international setting, as supervisors from all YUFE universities can take part.

Programme details:
  • Thursdays, 28 September 2023: “Supervisor profiles, diversity in students and managing expectations”
  • Thursdays, 19 October 2023: “Reflection and learning goals”
  • Thursdays, 09 November 2023: “Actionable feedback”

Format: Online (via Zoom). Language: English. All workshops times are 9:00 – 13:00 CET.

Registration deadline: 31 May, 2023. More information and how to apply and registration, click here.

NPO procedure

The internal NPO procedure came into effect in June 2021. The NPO research resources are intended for temporary staff with an appointment at FHML/UM, azM/Maastricht UMC and/or CTCM (for clinical trials) to enable research projects that are delayed incurred due to COVID-19 still to be completed. The arrangement is over time expanded, so that scholarship PhDs and support staff are also eligible. We now have one large number of employees receive an allowance from NPO funds for the benefit of the finalization of a research project or PhD program delayed by COVID.

The NPO-funds are available up to and including 2024 and can only be requested in the final year of the appointment of the employee concerned. This means that the end date of the extension to be funded from NPO research funds is 31 December 2024, and applications must be submitted by 31 August 2024.

Expansion-enhanced super-resolution radial fluctuations enable nanoscale molecular profiling of pathology specimens

Expansion microscopy physically enlarges biological specimens to achieve nanoscale resolution using diffraction-limited microscopy systems. However, optimal performance is usually reached using laser-based systems (for example, confocal microscopy), restricting its broad applicability in clinical pathology, as most centres have access only to light-emitting diode (LED)-based widefield systems. As a possible alternative, a computational method for image resolution enhancement, namely, super-resolution radial fluctuations (SRRF), has recently been developed. However, this method has not been explored in pathology specimens to date, because on its own, it does not achieve sufficient resolution for routine clinical use. Here, we report expansion-enhanced super-resolution radial fluctuations (ExSRRF), a simple, robust, scalable and accessible workflow that provides a resolution of up to 25 nm using LED-based widefield microscopy. ExSRRF enables molecular profiling of subcellular structures from archival formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues in complex clinical and experimental specimens, including ischaemic, degenerative, neoplastic, genetic and immune-mediated disorders. Furthermore, as examples of its potential application to experimental and clinical pathology, we show that ExSRRF can be used to identify and quantify classical features of endoplasmic reticulum stress in the murine ischaemic kidney and diagnostic ultrastructural features in human kidney biopsies.
